The Matrix - I had no clue what this movie was about, I just had some buddies invite me so what the heck, right? I was completely blown away. Probably the best experience I've ever had.

CA The Winter Soldier - I thought the first one sucked. I had no interest in watching this one, but I was again invited by a group of friends who paid for my ticket. I ended up loving it. By far, Marvels best movie.

Same. Someone talked me into going. I had somehow missed any discussion of it, and had never seen a trailer.

SFP, so glad you posted Matrix. Probably my top all time going in blind movie experience.

I'll add Edge of Tomorrow. Non stop fun.

Batman Begins. There was very little pub about it, and after the 1997 disaster, I was skeptical.

At the end I wished Bill Finger and Bob Kane were still alive to see it.

Raiders of the Lost Ark. Had read one review and saw it early, before everyone knew how fantastic it was.

The Godfather. I finished the book a day or so before seeing the movie. Hadn't really paid attention to the reviews or what people were saying.

Star Wars in 77 and Fatal Attraction in 87.

Serenity and Amelie already mentioned were good for me too.

American Psycho. Had never heard of it when my roommate's girlfriend showed up with a copy to watch one night. Talk about a movie out of left field. I think I said WTF at least 100 times, but thought it was awesome.

Matrix. I knew it was something special since my dad told me I had to watch this (maybe in 8th grade and it just came out on DVD), but didn't know what it was about. My dad taught a film/photography class and had a projector and peavey sound system set up in his classroom/art studio room. I got to watch it movie theater style by myself while he was working in the other room. I just remember walking in after it was done and being like WTF was that and how did I not know about this.

Overall, I'm pretty terrible about keeping up with what new movies are out there. So I get surprised by good movies a lot

The one that always comes to mind for me is Zombieland. I had no intentions of ever watching it, it looked dumb to me. Watched it begrudgingly one night with some friends and loved it, hilarious. Not necessarily the best movie ever but it's a very rare occasion when I watch a movie that surprises me with how good it is when I think it looks terrible.

Probably Inception, which is a popular answer for a lot of questions like this on this board.

It's not that I didn't think it would be good, I just didn't know anything about it. I was totally engrossed, which is why it might also be my #1 movie I'd like to see again for the first time.

In theaters:
The Dark Knight- I wasn't at all a comic book movie fan nor had I seen many of the other batman movies but loved this movie.
Gone Girl and What Lies Beneath, I was like in 8th grade or something and it was just one of the movies our group of friends were seeing on a random Friday night. Might be the only one we all ended up actually paying attention thru the whole thing and was legitimately scared

Watched The Prestige after becoming a fan of Nolan based on TDK, Inception, and Interstellar. All I know was that he directed it. Fantastic movie

shame they ruined it with all of those sequels.

You're still allowed to watch and enjoy the original even after sequels are made.

I was 16, I went to Siegen Village (or whatever it was called at the time) to catch a movie. Had no idea what I was there to see. Saw the poster for Pulp Fiction noting it had won many film festival type awards and saw the cast. It literally changed my viewpoints on what movies were all about. Although as time goes by I grow further away from it, not that I like it less, just don't have the desire I had to watch it over and over.....it was monumental for me.

I am ashamed to admit that the reason I went to go see The Shawshank Redemption in 1994 was because I had heard Winona Ryder had a nude scene.

I remember leaving the theater thinking it was an incredible film, but where the hell was Winona Ryder?

Not quite on point - let's say best movie experience despite preconceived notion:

13 Hours (I really don't like Michael Bay's work, normally)

As far as the OP - it's rare I watch a movie and don't know what to expect. I would say it's close between Letters from Iwo Jima and Sideways.

Just missed the cut: Moon (I knew just a little in advance, enough to disqualify it, but it is close.)

Edge of Tomorrow. Saw it on Cinemax late one night. Absolutely loved this movie.

Ex-Machina

Had zero expectations and caught it on Amazon Prime. I was blown away.
