I see you're drinking 1%. Is that because your think you're fat? Because you're not. You could be drinking whole if you wanted to.

The entire conversation in the coffee house when Kip explains the internet chat rooms to Uncle Rico is hilarious.

Kip: So, how long are we takin' about workin'?

Uncle Rico: What? Are you? you're already losing your steam?

Kip: No. I just? I have a chat room meeting at 4:00. I gotta be back here by then.

Uncle Rico: All right, you just start a little earlier. That's all.

Kip: All right.

Uncle Rico: Or else work afterwards. How long's the chat room?

Kip: Geez, sometimes up to three, four hours maybe... maybe not. I don't know.

Uncle Rico: You... you? you pay the bills for that? Does that cost money every time you're on, like, for minutes on the phone?

Kip: Yeah. Grandma's still payin' per minute. She gets kinda pissed at me sometimes 'cause I'm on there so long.

Uncle Rico: I'll bet she does. I'll tell you something, I'd be throwin' you out the window.

Kip: Napoleon, let go of me! I think you're bruisin' my neck meat!

Napoleon Dynamite: Do the chickens have large talons?

Napoleon Dynamite: It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed... bred for its skills in magic.

There's nothing to "get", it's a comedy. Some people will like it, some won't. I think Airplane! is one of the funniest movies ever made, but if someone doesn't like it I wouldn't say they don't "get it".

I agree with this as a general statement, but not in the case of Napoleon Dynamite.

It is not just a comedy. It is totally unique, and captures something that some people can relate to and others cant. It has its own magic, beyond just being "good" or "bad". Maybe its genetic, but I experienced it the first time like what the hell did I just watch, sort of bemused. It is only upon subsequent viewings (which have been MANY at this point) that I started to realize the sheer brilliance of this movie. There has never been anything like it. This thread proves that I am not the only one.

There are some people I respect that just dont "get it", and I think that term truly applies here.

eta:

My favorite line which makes me bust out every time:

"If you vote for me, all of your wildest dreams will come true"

also:

not a line, but everytime Don's face is on screen is priceless, its the best mugging performance ever

We'll agree to disagree. Just because it was a different format than the mainstream doesn't mean it was anything earth shattering, genre defining, or timeless. It's just a comedy. And how exactly does one "relate" to ND? Aside from living out in bumblefrick montana I'm not sure what it takes to relate to the movie. Everyone has weird family members. Everyone has odd friends. Everyone has been to high school. I (and I imagine the majority of others) don't go into a comedy attempting to relate to a character, I go to laugh and be entertained.

If someone wasn't entertained by ND or didn't think it was funny, I would simply say "eh, oh well. Guess it wasn't his style of humor", not "well he obviously didn't get it".

It's the lines more than anything. You talking about the weird relatives and odd friends tells me that you didn't really see the same thing that I did. You didn't get it. It's not to insult your intelligence, you just don't appreciate that type of humor which is fine.

Napoleon to Pedro "You see that girl over there, she came to my house yesterday and left a bunch of crap on my front porch. You dare me to go talk to her?"

Well, I wouldn't call it

earth shattering,

or

genre defining

but I think there is a very good argument to be made for its timelessness. There are references to the culture that are very generic to any decade from the 70s til today. Same is true for the setting; Montana could just as easily be any rural area of the USA. The time and place are really very ambiguous.

We'll agree to disagree.

Yeah, because I really dont think you can evaluate this movie as any kind of traditional comedy. There is something one-of-a-kind about it. Nothing is really played for laughs. Its hard to put it into words (which is why you just never know if someone will like it or not).

I think its a masterpiece, and pretty much in its own category.

I don't know about lines, but the scene where Napoleon throws the orange at the van and Uncle Rico screams gets me every time

Pedro: I like her bangs

Principal to Pedro (yes I went & found this to copy): Look, Pedro, I don't know how they do things down in Juarez, but here in Idaho we have a little something called pride. Understand? Smashing in the face of a pinata that resembles Summer Wheatley is a disgrace to you, me, and the entire Gem State.

It's not a line but when they are at the chicken farm and the guy has their lunch for them, with a bunch of eggs, sandwiches, and a jug you think is orange juice, but he cracks a raw egg in it then drinks is one of my favorite scenes

If someone doesn't like Mulholland Drive do they automatically "not get it", or can we not accept someone saying "I just don't care for it, not my thing"? I've said already I LIKED the movie, I have no problems at all with ND and have watched it several times. I just think that because it's different, yall are trying to build it up as some masterpiece that only the comedic elite will truly appreciate. It's a comedy, with teenagers, acting stupid (barely acting at all really) and saying random, off the wall lines. That's it..there's no need to build it up to be something more.

Arrested Development is one of my favorite shows of all time, and it is certainly different than a typical comedy...but whenever someone who has watched it says they don't like it, I don't accuse them of "not getting it". They probably just didn't care for it, and that's fine.
