It’s Vader.
There’s an interview that Mark Hamill gave where he said in the day of that shoot he wanted to watch cuz he wasn’t in the scene so he does. He watches the first take and turned to Lucas and was like “don’t you need some explanatory dialogue by a character to explain who this is? It’s the very first scene.”
George just said “it’s a bad guy all in black stepping into a completely white set. They’ll get it.” And walked off.

I'll never get tired of the arrival scenes in ID4 when it starts dawning on you how friggin massive those ships are. They still give me goosebumps.
