I concur. It was a crime he didn't win an Oscar for Gladiator. He acted circles around Russell Crowe who is one of the most overrated actors in the business.

And then to lose it to Benicio del Toro for that uninspired and overrated performance in Traffic

Phoenix was 26 years old when he was nominated for Gladiator. There's only been one male actor in the 90+ year history of the Oscars that won an Oscar at that age or younger. That was Timothy Hutton for Ordinary People in 1980. The Academy just doesn't award Oscars to actors that young.

Ordinary People in 1980

In my opinion, Ordinary People over Raging Bull that year for Best Picture is the most scandalous decision ever made in The Academy of Motion Picture's history.

For those who would argue the point, consider that Raging Bull is now up to #4 in AFI's top 100 films, whereas Ordinary People is nowhere on that list.

Apologies for going off topic.

Also just happened to be up against DDL in Lincoln for his performance in The Master. Bad timing for that one

Just learned that Sam Rockwell is 50, or I'd throw him in the mix.

I’m a fan of Leo, but no Christian Bale. Gyllenhaal and Joaquin Phoenix also better

Def between these three. Leo is awesome. But Bals, Phoenix, and Gylly are far more diversely talented in their abilities to inhabit roles.

Ledger should/would have been on this list. But.. you know.

Does Norton even act anymore? Dude was on this amazing trajectory and seemed to disappear like 15 years ago.

Now that you've mentioned it, I agree, he has more or less, vanished.

I've only seen Phoenix in a couple of roles, but IMO he seems exactly opposite.

I'm going with Bale as my #1. There are some awesome other names listed in this thread...but the guy is rock solid in everything he has done going all the way back to when he was 12 in Empire of the Sun.

I can't wait for Ford vs Ferrari to come out. November can't get here soon enough.
