Belle was probably the hottest girl I’ve ever seen in person last summer at Disney World
Gaston kept giving me a weird look whenever I got close to her

Beauty and the Beast is presented as the standard Disney "Grrrrl Power!" trope but is actually a fat, antisocial loser's wet dream:
-The big, strong, attractive alpha male seems just as pushy, overbearing, and repellent to the beautiful heroine as he does to said fat antisocial loser
-The Beast lives alone in the forest in an old castle with his animated furniture (i.e., in his parents' house with his action figures) not because he is a complete and utter failure, but because everyone else misunderstands him and fears his power
-A hot girl will eventually come to see past your unattractive exterior and fall in love with the true Prince that you are within if you just keep her locked in your basement long enough
-The big, strong, attractive alpha male seems just as pushy, overbearing, and repellent to the beautiful heroine as he does to said fat antisocial loser

Criticizing the Stockholm syndrome element of beauty and the beast makes sense. Championing a huge a-hole, who tries to coerce a marriage, as a hero does not.

Gaston was a douche.

A tale as old as time

If the same exact movie was made in 2025, this board would have had a field day.
Instead, it was made in 1991 and this board is obsessed with nostalgia, so it's fine.
The fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" is based on a story originally written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, titled "La Belle et la Bête" (Beauty and the Beast), published in 1740.
It's not like this is some new "woke" story. It's an old fairy tale. There are tons of similar very old fairy tales.

Looks like IMDB got me. When I looked it had him as Petey but now it has him listed on the cast with no character and Petey as a different actor.
