I know there have been a few threads about this show since it's been released on Netflix but damn this show is so good. There is not a single bad episode. The last speech made by the German Lieutenant (probably wrong rank) was great. They were fighting for the wrong reasons but they formed bonds just as strong as the ones made in Easy Company. Can't help but tear up at the end listening to the actual men talk about they don't see themselves as heroes. They gave more for their country than most of us can fathom. Such a good show.

I'm glad they made it when they did to ensure so many of their real voices were heard

GOAT miniseries.

GOAT opening music

Just a fantastic show all around.

I do find some of the inaccuracies fascinating. Because it came from the memories of surviving members, and their perspectives, it did get some things "wrong": Dyke (continued serving with distinction through Korea and some thought he was a good guy), Blithe (didn't die, stayed in the service), Leibgott being jewish (his kids were shocked by this claim as he raised them catholic and never talked about the war), etc

I just started my first watch of the show, it's incredible. I'm on episode 6, I'll hate when it ends. They portray the stress of battle so well and make you feel like your in the fight. I enjoy the real accounts of the guys who served in the war at the beginning of every episode, it's crazy the went through this and survived.

6-9 have some real gut punches. Real hard to take.

And some real triumphs.

Wish I could watch it for the 1st time again.

The Blithe screw up is by far the most egregious. They said he died of his wounds in 1948 and portrayed him a space cadet coward.

He actually served with distinction and even won a bronze star. Was he frozen from fear a few times and did he lose his vision for a spell and Winters snapped him out of it? Yes, but apparenlty that happened quite a bit more than we knew about.

The family of Blithe hated Ambrose and the producers for they way they portrayed their father/grandfather, etc., but Apparenlty the show and book based their writing on actual WWII official reports about his death, which were notoriously shoddy and inaccurate many times.

The other big thing I learned about after watching some interviews was that Spiers finally told Winters later in life when they were writing the book and trying to avoid lawsuits that all of the stories about him were true.

Apparently he and Winters were very good friends and Spiers was well like by almost everyone. He was just an absolute savage, fearless SOB in battle.

Listen to the podcast as well. Just shows how much work went into the show, and also how much it benefited by being able to speak to the actual men.

Winters, Babe, Wild Bill, etc were utilized in full for the show. They basically had all access and a red carpet to all things development of the show

How is "by far the most egregious"? He was in no way portrayed as "a space cadet coward". You admit he was frozen from fear a few times and lost his vision so that part was true. He was included in the story to show the affects that jumping out of an aircraft into a war zone can have on a person and other men (almost all) were shown having difficulty handling combat. He like many other faced his fears and moved forward. So they based their info on their official reports. What were they supposed to do?

Before I read it here, I never knew he ended up being a decorated soldier. I would've liked to have see that in the little writeups at the end of the episodes.

I really wish I could forget it and watch it again. Such a fantastic series.

Eta: when that veteran is talking about signing up for paratrooper. Something to the effect of hearing about it, saying hell no, hearing $50 a month, and asking where do I sign? Such a different time. I try to picture myself in that position and I can't.

Just watched something on YouTube about this. Apparently the publisher’s lawyers were all worked up about this, and when Winters called, Spiers said “You need a letter? I’ll send you a letter.”

The family of Blithe hated Ambrose
---If true, there was no reason to hate Ambrose. His book does not portray Blithe the same way the series does. Once any author sells his work to a film studio, it's out of his hands.

I can't remember if Spiers ended up going or not, but there was an interview with Winters where Winters said Spiers was afraid to go to Europe for the premier because he could be arrested for war crimes.

All the praise that Band of Brothers receives is completely justified, it is great stuff.

In addition to all the positives already noted in this thread BOB is one of the most re-watchable shows out there. It is just as good every time I watch it.

Ambrose wasn't a very good historian as he was more concerned with lionizing his subjects than the facts.

*The above does not mean I feel BoB is not a good show by any means.

Agree.

And yes -- of course BoB is a great series, but by lionizing the subjects Ambrose also became a lionized figure himself.
