That would lessen the importance of the Avatar, so I'd hope they don't go that route.
a little but you would think that the Avatar still would be unique as the bridge to the Spirit world, and having access to his/her past lives to make themselves almost invincible in the Avatar state

My prediction
The letter sent to Iroh was actually a trap and the equalists begin to take out the United Forces Navy.
Mako and Korra infiltrate the Equalist headquarters.
They find Amon and either Amon reveals he is a blood bender or is using Tarrlok.
Amon takes Korra's bending and Mako's bending.
The next season is Korra going into the spiritual world and trying to regain her powers.

Nah, we saw them send it in that episode. It is a dumb idea to reply to it though since they now know when they'll be coming.

SPOILERS from the trailer:
I'm thinking he takes Korra's bending, but not Mako's, because Tenzin will likely interfere and save them (or a little late). It would be just kinda dumb to remove BOTH of their bending.

Damn, I don't see how either of them could survive that. Fantastic finale thus-far.

I agree but it makes you wonder if they didn't survive, who the next antagonist will be.
ETA: this episode was badass!

Yeah, was an interesting backstory for both of them, and am unexpected way for him to get taken out.
Hmm, guess I was a season behind on when I thought she'd be able to give folks their powers back.

Pretty damn great final episode.

Glad they didn't leave Korra not being able to bend as a cliffhanger.

Damn fine finale although I'm thinking Korra getting her powers back was kind of a cop out.
Wished season 2 was about her getting her powers back
So are Amon and Tarrlok dead?

Eh, that would have been really really boring IMO. I'm glad they gave them back to her in the episode, slight cop out or not.

I'm guessing yes. An unexpected explosion with his back turned should be enough to take Amon out. It would be pretty cheesy for him to have survived it. Not like he would be a true danger to Korra with her having Avatar powers now anyway.

I'm just saying since this is a Nick show so I was surprised that those died basically on screen

Yeah that's true, though they did pan away first.

Wouldn't be surprised if amon lived through the explosion. He knew what tarrlock was about to do which is why they showed him cry right before the explosion. If I had to guess he created a water cocoon just in time but still took a lot of damage. He will be back

The only way that would work is if some super powerful spirit were behind Amon, but that wasn't the case.

Without question. I'd also bet that Amon killed his second in command on screen, although I'm not sure if they'll admit it on screen. I find it ironic that they'll show horribly brutal stuff on screen like bloodbending (the bloodbending of the wolves was easily the most disturbing image yet), but as long as they say they somehow survive, its ok by Nick standards. Pretty confident all the villains but Sato died.

Highly, highly doubt it. It was fairly final, and the tone of the scene from the creators indicates it. They're dead.
But in the last few minutes, how great of a character did they make Tarlok? He is now fully pitiable and was very much mutilated by his father to do what he did within the series. He seemed to be a good person at heart but was pushed beyond the point of true redemption by his father and brother. A fully realized character within the narrative, and being in only like 6 episodes, that's great for the writers to do that.

I agree, Amon crying because his brother joined him and finally being happy seemed very final to me.

I keep getting distracted by the parachutes that had to pop out every time a plane got taken out, thought about making a drinking game out if it.

Yeah never thought I'd see a murder suicide on Nick

I was kinda disappointed. For me the whole idea of the show was the grave danger of Amon and a rising rebellion of non benders that could tip the world into world war once again. With them taking the city, I really expected the finale to be the equalist's defeating the fleet, and Amon taking Korra's powers (though I expected in return she would unlock air bending).
That would have set up a second season great IMO, allowing a full scale war to erupt in the nations, with Korra having to find her powers once again before finally finishing Amon. I also was expecting Amon to turn out to be someone a bit different, someone with spirit power, or someone incredibly gifted who had lost his parents to fire benders. Having it turn out to be Tarlok's brother, was kinda meh for me. It made sense, but it took away the great theme I felt the show had where you could see why Amon was doing things the way he was. I was disappointed with that, and his followers seeing him as such, came across to me as the creators making an easy way for them to just "end" the rebellion in 5 minutes.
I felt that way about Korra getting her powers back too, it was a quick easy way to do it, as well as the ability to restore bending powers. Personally I felt they shouldn't have done that, it really cheapened the danger of the series for me to at the end just be able to reverse everything like that. However that's me, and I'm likely being way too hard on the show
