The final act takes off and goes fast but man it really crawls to get there

I kept looking at my phone like shite it’s been 2 hours and we STILL have another hour and 10 minutes left

All that water capture CGI honestly looked the same as the first one. Not sure what took another decade of improvements and innovations for but whatevs I guess.

The third act is definitely where they did all that filming in new Zealand with the massive water tanks

The only complaint is the HFR/switching back and forth between 24 and 48. It turned it into a video game at times.

ETA: Also some story stuff didn't make sense and got dropped big time.

That’s my main concerns and one of the reasons I believe the legs on this one might not be as long as his other films

I guess I'm in the minority but I didn't feel the length of the film at all.

I didn’t like the length but it didn’t bother me so much as the 2nd act length built a lot towards everything in the 3rd act coming together

China numbers are far lower than predicted. Looks like covid is still affecting the Chinese

quote:

In #China’s BoxOffice, AvatarTheWayOfWater??? grossed lower than expected 23.7M on FRI opening day, incl. previews.
Extremely frontloaded FRI with low walk-in rates: Discounting 10.4M FRI pre-sales & 5.5M previews, only 7.8M in revenue came from tickets actually bought today.

quote:

Even so, AvatarTheWayOfWater??? absolutely dominated local #BoxOffice with a record 98% of #China’s market share on FRI.
The #Avatar??? sequel was screened across over 205k screenings on FRI, representing 79.8% of all screenings open in the market.
Eyeing a 65M-85M 3-day opening
2/2

If the Chinese numbers don’t come in can we say it’s a disappointment? That number was always the one that was baked in

Story/plot…meh

This is what I am afraid of

“Visual experiences” aren’t stories or movies. They are theme park rides. “Visual experiences” just don’t do it for me

If the story is “meh”, I’ll pass

Meh is not the right word I’d use. It’s simple. It’s a simple family in hiding story. The worst family ever at staying in hiding.

We are in the spoiler thread btw

Saw it last night.
The effects are amazing.
But it feels too long. Like during the final fight scene I kept waiting for our to be over. The second I saw directed by James Cameron we left.
The entire theater stayed.
Not sure if an after credits.

I liked the sea people the bad guys being all dead people in avatars was interesting.

Like the first one. Amazing 3d and cgi.
Though I doubt I rewatch it.

Since this is the spoilers thread.

Anyone else think Sigourney Weavers daughter has no father and that the magic or local spirit will be the father? I have that feeling. Especially since she seems to have powers over other life.

The swimming looked neat but Space Whaling? What happened to Unobtanium?
Also all humans decided to move to Pandora after earth dies? They didn't find a planet with an oxygen rich environment?

The break even is over a billion. Actually I heard the other day if it's not the top 4 highest grossing ever it may not get a sequel.

I kept hearing about Kate Winslet holding her breath for seven minutes. Watched entire movie and couldn't tell who Kate Winslett was. I kept waiting for the general to go swimming or something

I can't believe some of you actually believe this

However, the studio has to be concerned about what's happening in Asia. It's really struggling in what was expected to be their massive market. It's falling hard in China

quote:

#AvatarTheWayOfWater???’s Extremely frontloaded trend in #China’s #BoxOffice remains on SAT with low walk-in rates: Discounting 10.9M SAT pre-sales, only 10M in revenue came from tickets actually bought today.
For comparison #GodzillavsKong had 21.1M of its 28M bought on SAT.

quote:

With 7.5M in pre-sales for SUN as of SAT 11pm, if walk-in rate stays that low under 50%, it’s extremely unlikely that #AvatarTheWayOfWater??? even reaches 60M over its 3-day opening weekend by the end of SUN in #China’s #BoxOffice at this point.

Yikes

quote:

What happened to #Avatar? in China is unfortunate, though if cinemas remain open & CoVID situation improves, with good WoM on its side, it can continue to run well for weeks. Weekend will likely earn around $60M+, as for full run maybe $150M, $200M, heck even $300M is doable.

The fat one?

Family and I are seeing it tomorrow, only going because the ticket was already purchased.

But I'll keep an open mind and check back in with an objective review.
