I couldn’t imagine what this thing would be doing if China was in a different situation. They love underwater cgi lol. It probably would be even higher.

I don’t think that’s completely true. I thought it was going to lose money. I didn’t think it was going to bomb no. I just thought the first one was a product of the time.

But then I realized a few things. There hasn’t been anything like this for awhile. Something that takes you for a ride. You feel like you went swimming in the ocean after seeing this movie in 3D. I guess with Top Gun 2 you felt like you were riding in a jet. But I think people are really wanting that fun movie theater experience back. Despite Hollywoods best efforts to throw it away.

That and, there’s hardly anything playing at the theater. Why not go diving in the ocean for 20 bucks?

What in the hell are you talking about? I fell asleep in the movie, didn't hate it, and wasn't trying to give a glowing endorsement of it. All of those things can be possible. Go back to lurking.

The funny thing is everyone thought 13 years was too long of a gap, but it's actually been a positive for the film.

There’s likely around 500 million to 1 billion left on the table cause of China/Russia

Russia alone was like 115 million last time and probably could have pushed higher.

China before the Covid meltdown had projections of up to a billion and China seems to really like the IP.

That’s basically what movies are these days: events. So there was no doubt in my mind one of the biggest event movies since the first film would end up doing just fine, despite all the existential things working against it.

the box office is insanely boom or bust these days and I think it sort of sucks. There are just entire swaths of films that aren’t really profitable anymore cause people don’t want to pay to go see them. And original blockbusters are even more boom and bust so it also pushes the industry toward running back the same IP’s indefinitely.

Yeah Top Gun is probably getting surpassed by mid next week and from there it will be very interesting to see what the drops look like the week after New Years.

That is typically when films not named Avatar 1 or Titanic take absolute nosedives.

If A2 can buck that trend and have decent holds, relatively speaking, Spider Man will eventually be passed up too imo.

That means word of mouth was good.

They’re saying it’ll break 1.3 billion after the holiday weekend.

Saw it yesterday with my kids. It’s fine. My oldest was not a fan of my take defending the humans.

It’s not whaling as much as hunting for a singular item from an animal and discarding the rest, like dancing with wolves and buffalo.

I told her at least the humans had a good reason to kill the whales. It wasn’t like they were taking rhino horns for homeopathic ED meds or tusks for decorating pool sticks or something. Stopping aging is a legit goal.

I probably dropped a couple notches in her eyes. My youngest’s reaction to a kid dying had me nervous so I threw in a “he dead” to give some levity.

The ones complaining about the kids’ dialog need to listen how awkward kids are at dialog in real life. It was pretty accurate bro cuz dog dude.

I feel like post-COVID I'm just totally out of the mainstream.

I didn't even know it was out yet. From the talk on here over the last few months I thought this was going to be a joke because the first one didn't age well and there was no demand for some weak-storyline sequel to a movie nobody ever talks about anymore.

And yet it's killing it. I'm old I guess.
