they could probably control the realm fairly easily.

only if Jaime left the ruling up to Tyrion. Jaime is not a Lord he is only good at killing.

Tyrwin was incredibly competent except for the giant blind spot regarding evaluating the talents of his children. Which is no small thing. It's actually the whole point of the Game of Thrones.

Jaime is incredibly competent but lacks any ambition whatsoever, which makes him real interesting. The fact Tyrwin can't see the value of Tyrion strains credibility.

For all of the deaths, only two actually surprised me -- Tyrwin and the Hound. Also, the fact Littlefinger was orchestrating the death of Joffrey -- a ruler so incompetent its amazing he lived as long as he did.

The deaths follow a certain pattern to me. If a character pops up and Martin makes an effort to get you to like that person -- they are going to die.

He sent Tyrion to King's Landing to rule in his absence. He knew Cersei was incompetent. He hated Tyrion but he was smart enough to see that Tyrion had his uses.

I think he began to see that towards the end of "Game of Thrones". He knew Cersei is pretty much worthless, and he actively takes council from Tyrion in the 3rd book and not Cersei. He overestimates Jamie and thinks Jamie is his father's son, when really if Tyrion wasn't a dwarf and didn't kill his mother in childbirth, I'm thinking Tyrion may have gone on to be Tywin's favored child.

Did anyone make it through SoS without doing this?
Just finished SoS so I'm bumping this thread. I was on an ereader and didn't flip back. I was pissed.

I text a friend who has read all of the books going off about Arya getting killed and how Martin went too far with the shock value this time. I think my summary to him of what Martin was thinking went like...

"Hey don't you want this girl to reunite with her mother?! TOO BAD! frick YOU! Her mothers dead. Oh and we killed her brother too! Well at least she's alive to get revenge on the Freys right....nope! frick YOU! We killed her too for no reason! Aren't you mad? Well read the next chapter. That's right! Its Tyrion! Just to remind you all of the Lannisters are still alive! frick YOU!"

Martin is excellent at having 90% of his chapters be elaborate descriptions or some meaningless factoid and then blowing your mind in the final 10%.

I think you could read the last page in every chapter in AFFC and not miss a beat.

elaborate descriptions
Pretty common for epics. I really don't mind, I can always see the entire setting in my head, including what people are wearing, doing, etc.

Of course, the whole experience of being a dwarf and the aftermath of his mother dying while giving birth to him helped mold Tyrion in who he is. Remove those unique factors and Tyrion would have likely turned out a very different person.

Which she may not have done if he hadn't been a dwarf and "killed" their mother. Though it is Cersei and we know how she likes to play with her brothers' peckers.
