Really good and endlessly rewatchable.

Its pure intensity from the first scene to when the credits roll.

It is awesome.

This movie has always been badass. It’s basically a single, long form chase sequence Definitely underrated.

The entire city/temple scene - how did they even do that?
Incredible movie and that scene perfectly depicted (as far as we know is possible) such a bizarre thing.

The little kids getting left behind was a tough scene.

Thanks for posting about this OP.

I've been meaning to watch this movie for a good while now, but like you mentioned, I never got around to it. Then, I forgot about it until this thread.

Reading the feedback ITT has certainly helped pique my interest again. Going to watch it tonight.

It's an unrelenting chase movie. Its Mad Max: Fury Road on foot.

Like Taken and Mad Max, its mindless action, therefore highly rewatchable when you don't have the time to pay attention.

...just styled up in a period piece to make it seem its more than it really is.

Which is a well made, exciting but very simple chase movie.

Those scenes were incredible, and showed the genius of the Mayans and some of their construction/agriculture techniques.

I know historically the Aztecs were more responsible for and in line with human sacrifice, but there is definitely evidence that point towards the Mayans having their own rituals.

Gruesome as it was, those scenes were beautiful and showed the genius of their style.

Enjoy it, sir. It’s gonna grab you from the opening scene when James Horner’s music opens up into the jungle…

Crash won best picture the year Apocalypto came out. Gibson was snubbed in most categories, only nominated for makeup, sound editing and mixing.

You’re right, I just checked that.

Crazy that Apocalypto wasn’t even nominated for Best Foreign Language film. They took complete no-names for some of the parts, actors that may never be in a movie again, taught them lines in Mayan, slapped them in a Mexican jungle, and made a cool arse movie.

I had put off this movie until recently, no particular reason why. Now I’ve seen it three times the past week.

Used to get high AF in college and watch it.

If you liked Apocalypto then you'd like "The Dead Lands" as well.

This is probably the best "take you back in time" scene of any movie that I have ever seen.

The first time I watched this movie I was drunk and in the morning I thought that scene was a dream b/c it was so realistic.

I think it's Mel Gibson's best movie as a director. The casting was very important, because it's a lot like a silent movie. The actors from his village had to show a wide range of emotions. In the beginning there was happiness over killing the boar. There was humor when they got Blunted, the big guy, to rub himself with the hot pig balls. Disappointment from Blunted's MIL, and sadness & shame from Blunted when his MIL nagged him over his lack of fertility. But they were a happy group, and a fair group, so Blunted could laugh with them.

The MIL was great at nagging, but after they were captured, she and Blunted both showed caring & love for each other without saying anything.

The scene where the natives are being sacrificed is very realistic, as is the horror on the natives faces as they stand in line watching their fellow villagers go thru it.

Jaguar Paw's dad, Flint Sky, is the perfect leader. He is brave thru the end. JP being the guy that challenges the predators makes sense when you see how his father taught him thru his end also. He is being raised to be a leader, and he is one.

The bad guys are menacing from the start, but their power comes from their domination of other groups of people, and you can tell from the way they look at the Oracle Girl, they feel a little threatened. How do you get a child to look the way that kid did?

I can't think of another foreign language film that sucks me into watching until the end the way it does every time it's playing. The only time I haven't watched it until the end was when I fell asleep watching it.

Your synopsis is what I would envision my OP being haha. Great breakdown.

I was glad he used unknown actors to make this film; I was watching a real tribe as far as I was concerned. And it was awesome to watch a movie about natives that didn’t have Wes Studi or Graham Greene in it, although I’m a fan of both.

There’s a healthy amount of mysticism in this film that notches it up a bit in my mind. I can deal with violence as long as there is a balance with the spiritual/metaphysical world…
