They showcased that WM3 match perfectly. You really understand his selflessness and sacrifice with what he did there. Hogan was really good in this.

Fake or whatever, you can’t dismiss the enigma of a pro wrestler. They are unique

That may be the most "real" Vince McMahon moment that I have ever seen.
No way that was fake.
Agreed... I think more could have been done with this documentary though. I knew most of this stuff. It wasn't OJ: Made In America that I was hoping for. I've long been fascinated by him, and they should have made it longer. Andre gives you a lot of material to work with. An absolute one of a kind.

Especially in that era. Seemed pretty chaotic when even they weren't sure how it would end up.
I haven't watched it in 10-15 years but I still love reading/listening to old 80s and 90s behind the scenes things, shoot interviews, etc.

Virtually no depth to this one.

Seemed like it should have been another half hour or 45 mintues longer so they could have been more detailed.

The McMahon moment was actually the most lasting and powerful scene in the film, he was totally exposed in front of a camera probably for the first time ever.
The doc was slick and the music was good, but, I don't know, it felt like it missed something. I'd say 90 percent of the content was alresdy covered in the phenomenal A&E biography done on Andre in the late 90s.
That one, although not nearly as flashy, had way better interviews with the N. Carolina crew, and it already revealed how sad Andre was through the latter part of his life.
Also, the doc felt way more "30 for 30" than HBO. Obviously it's the Simmons influence, but how do not take advantage of hbo's exclusive deal with Liev Schreiber as a narrator.
Seeing the Elvis, The Searcher doc preview makes me slightly disappointed in the Andre doc. The Elvis one looks way more artistic, and doesn't seem to have the typical shots of guys being interviewed in their office - - only voice over.
Overall, I'd probably give the documentary a B-, but I think it easily could've been better.

I watched it. I really enjoyed it. I knew how much personal pain he was going through but it’s still so sad.

Hulk's impression of Macho Man gave me chills
ETA: bald guy with spectacles is a douche
ETA: Lawler looking yoked and coked. Good for him
ETA: Ahnold!
ETA: Nature Boy discussing Andre's gifts
ETA: Vince, Hulk, and Mean Gene talking Andre farts. This has been phenomenal

Exactly. The whole reason Simmons has been wanting to do an Andre doc was because he kept saying one has never been done. As someone else pointed out, a lot of the stuff in this doc was known from the A&E deal about Andre.
I was super disappointed. It felt like the entire thing was just to put over Vince and Hogan. Spent way too much time talking about his farting, drinking, and sex life, without even telling any interesting stories.
The only stuff I thought was good was the The Princess Bride stuff, and the end with Andre breaking down.
Also, Hogan and Shane McMahon tell blatant lies. Shane’s lie was clearly to put over WWF, saying Andre was wrestling in front of very few people before WWF made him a star. The thing is, the show had just told us Andre was wrestling in front of thousands of people 5 nights a week before WWF.
Hogan just told a normal Hogan fib. He said he first saw Andre when he was in like 8th grade. Andre didn’t even come to North America until Hogan was closer to 20 years old.

This was a doc for non-wrestling fans. The Rick Flair doc was aimed more at fans, which is why I didn't like it as much. I felt even the stories designed to make him look more human were really just variations on how awesome he was. The Andre doc was more about him as a person, and the rise of professional wrestling (for 10-15 minutes, its virtually a Hulk Hogan doc).
I can see why a hard core fan would be turned off by this, but his was aimed at more casual fans like myself. I loved it, and I did like how Vince showed an actual human emotion while still coming off as a total sociopath. The only thing I felt was missing was more of Andre's cultural footprint beyond wrestling, like the Shepard Fairey street art.
I mean, how many wrestlers are an art world meme? The Obey Giant is right next to the Campbell's Soup Can in pop art.

Amazingly, I think a very well done 3-4 hour doc on the rise of pro wrestling from the scuzzy territories to the glories of the 80s and 90s probably would have been a better film.
It would heavily feature Hogan AND Andre AND Flair AND Austin, Rock, etc..
You also can't have WWF/E as a partner because they will try to water it down, fib, sugar coat, etc the trappings of the lifestyle and its hazards, but, obviously, that presents its own challenges because they basically own all the archival footage from every major wrestling production ever.
It would take a real artist, though to do it right. You have to present Vince in a true way, as a complete power hungry maniac, who also pulled off one of the most significant and incredible feats in entertainment when he consolidated the territories and rooted out all the shady characters involved in that world.

I, too, found it overly similar to the A&E Biography on Andre. There wasn't much new info revealed, which made it a disappointment for me; however, since he was my childhood hero, I'm sure I knew a lot of things that others didn't.
I also agree than Shane McMahon is a huge douche and really had no business being included in the documentary.

A&E already made that one as well

Just watched it. Not impressed. Already knew most of the stories. Felt like an ESPN doc, and not 30 for 30. I give it a 6/10
