What? Henry was always going to be a lackey. He was never going to be anything more than a crook. Frank was groomed to be Bumpy's replacement. Frank is closer to Paulie than he was to Henry. Henry would equated to one of his brothers.

The bigger difference is Goodfellas is about 20-30 year olds playing gangsters and rot from inside that killed the mafia. The main characters in Goodfellas are all relatively small time. None of the main 3 are made guys. Even Paulie is only a Capo
American Gangster is more of a biographical film about Frank Lucas' rise and fall. Denzel is a beast and carries the movie but it is kind of paint by numbers.
Goodfellas is a masterpiece. American Gangster is entertaining with an all time Denzel performance.
I am not one that normally says you need a black director to direct a black story. However, you compare Goodfellas vs American gangster you can feel the difference. Scorese is steeped in Italian American NY and American Music. goodfellas feels real. Ridley Scott is great but he is brit. A black gangster movie set in New York in the 70s deserved to have a way better soundtrack

gotta tell ya, I've rewatched American Gangster a bunch of times too. Mostly cause it was on, but its not tiring.

I love American Gangster. I used to watch it over and over when it would play on cable. But goodfellas is the better film.
