Who else you'd add to the list?

He doesn't say a word in the first Godfather which
I think effectively portrays him as a stone cold killer.

In the novel his backstory is kind of interesting. He was an ex-cop who was known to walk around with a flashlight to knock over the heads of young Italian youths that got involved in gangs, to try to save them before they went too far astray.

Instead of writing parking tickets to illegally parked vehicles that were never payed anyway, he would use the flashlight to bust out their windshields.

He was eventually kicked off the force for killing a drug dealing pimp with said flashlight.

Richard Bright, the actor who played the part, was tragically killed on the streets of Manhattan after being hit by a tour bus.

Al Neri had nothing to do with this, he was Michael's guy and Michael was still a civilian at this point

Al Neri was a former police officer who was in jail for manslaughter. Tom got him out of jail and put under Clemenza, he was viewed as a replacement for Luci. Yes he did become Michael's man.

In Godfather II, you could tell he didn’t want to kill Fredo.

Neri didn't do the horse head, that was Brasi. The book goes into great detail about how Michael got him in the life and made him loyal to him (paralleling how Vito did the same to Brasi). Neri was an ex NYPD cop so technically he wasn't supposed to be involved but his wife left him or something and he lost it and beat a pimp to death that did something to some young girl IIRC. The book eluded that he never needed a gun on the job, just his flashlight lol.

But to the topic, right hand man in movies/film, I think you gotta put Chris from the Wire, and Silvio from the Sopranos. This is actually a lot more difficult than I thought.

Mike from Breaking Bad definitely needs to be on the list. He might not be the coolest, but he is exceptionally capable.

Johnny Ringo could have been - he knew Latin, after all - but he was just too high-strung.

I think Neri's loyalty to Michael is pretty unquestioned but the bigger question is who helped Fredo the night of the attempted hit on Michael?

Somebody had to leave the drapes open in the bedroom and kill the two gunman.More than likely it was Rocco...who later "volunteered" for the suicide mission to kill Hyman Roth.

Paramount made two version of Hammett's novel The Glass Key, in '35 and '42. I prefer the earlier version -- you can make a case for it being the first American film noir -- but it's not easy to see; the remake shows up on TCM occasionally.

The story is interesting b/c a henchman/enforcer is in fact the main character.

Wasn’t Rocco head of security too? And he was told by Michael that the assassins were to be taken alive.

Michael also told Tom they wouldn't catch them alive, that they were dead already.

the bodies were found outside Fredo's i figured Johnny Ola or another guy killed them and took off
