His movies go back and forth, ones better than the one before. All it takes is a few duds to ruin a career. No director is ever rock solid. Except John Ford and William Wyler. Hitchcock is overrated. Discuss that!

He and Villeneuve are probably the best two big picture filmmakers working today and their names alone should bring you to the box office.
They very, very rarely miss.
I think Inception is fantastic. I think Interstellar is one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. Memento proves he can do the smaller budgets and tighter characters.
But there is nothing that can top the Prestige. That film is a masterpiece and a master class in directing. Unlike his muddled sound mixes that come later, the Prestige is balanced, thoughtful, and executed to perfection.
The twist is beautifully done. The concept well conceived. It is a movie that should be and will be studied for its sets, costumes, lighting, pacing, tension, and acting.
I would put that movie up against any movie of the last 50 years.

Disagree strongly, he isn’t even close to the most overrated.

Of the 11 feature films he has directed since January 1, 2000, the following are ranked on IMDB’s Top 250:
Memento (2000)
Batman Begins (2005)
The Prestige (2006)
The Dark Knight (2008)
Inception (2010)
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Interstellar (2014)
Oppenheimer (2023)
All of those are either awesome or very good. And honestly, TDKR is very good, and the rest are what I’d consider awesome.

Tenet was the only boring one, Oppenheimer was good for a single watch. I've watched every other one at least five times and they haven't gotten boring.

He’s not batting .1000 but it’s an insane statement.
The only actively working directors today that are in his stratosphere* are DV, Spielberg, Fincher, Scorsese, PTA, Tarantino, and Wes Anderson.
*I’m not saying he’s better than all or any of them but he’s miles ahead of Gerwig, Poole, Coogler, Aster, Chazelle, Zhao, Ho, or anybody else.
And I really like every director listed above.

The only reason Prestige isn’t the best movie of the 21st century is because Interstellar exists.

I’ve said this ~100 times but I have never got this complaint. There isn’t a single Nolan film I’ve had trouble hearing. I simply think there is a biology thing that exists where some people struggle with his hearing and others dont.

You’re not alone. I see the complaint all the time but nobody ever posts examples. I can maybe understand Bane in TDKR. That’s just Tom Hardy wearing a mask though. You can barely understand him without one either.

Honestly one of his biggest directorial frick ups IMO was in Dunkirk. Because he insisted on no CGI, it came across as one or two thousand calmed waiting in lines to get off the beach as opposed to the desperate clusterfrick it actually was.

Disagree. That title belongs to Tarantino.

I like Dunkirk and I can’t disagree with this.
It was his most stylized film. Tenet is my least favorite (but I still like,) but Dunkirk is the least imaginative or inspired.
Still a marvel but meh for his body of work.

3.5 of those are legitimately great. I still say The Prestige is the best film of the millennium.

Jordan Peele is over employed. Not sure he's well rated.
Sounds like you're in the minority thinking there.

Yet more agree with me?
Huh. Ok
Huh. Ok
Posted on 4/8/26 at 6:35 am to RollTide1987
Nope. Most overrated are Tarantino, M. Night Shamalan and Wes Anderson

I thought the Tesla nonsense of the story of The Prestige was rubbish. The Illusionist was more entertaining, imo.
Afleck was the bomb in Phantoms, yo.

Memento is his best movie.
