After “Barbie,” Mattel Is Raiding Its Entire Toy Box To Use For Future Films

In 2019, Greta Gerwig became the latest in a line of writers, directors, and producers to make a pilgrimage to a toy workshop in El Segundo, California. Touring the facility, the Mattel Design Center, has become a rite of passage for Hollywood types who are considering transforming one of the company’s products into a movie—a list that now includes such names as J. J. Abrams (Hot Wheels) and Vin Diesel (Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots).

Kreiz, meanwhile, hired a veteran of Miramax, Robbie Brenner, to head up the newly minted Mattel Films. Her first task: assemble a team of development executives to rummage through Mattel’s toy chest and identify I.P. that could be fodder for Hollywood studios. Mattel would help match properties with writers, actors, and directors; studios would provide all the funding. The brands, and audiences’ familiarity with them, were their own form of currency. Brenner told me, “In the world we’re living in, I.P. is king. Pre-awareness is so important.”

The movie, which opens in mid-July, is tracking to be one of the blockbusters of the summer. Meanwhile, Mattel has amassed a long slate of other projects. Daniel Kaluuya, for example, has agreed to produce a feature about Barney, the purple dinosaur. Thirteen more films have been publicly announced, including movies about He-Man and Polly Pocket; forty-five are in development. (Some of the projects have an ouroboros quality. Tom Hanks is supposed to star in “Major Matt Mason,” which will be based on an astronaut action figure that has been largely forgotten, except for the fact that it helped inspire Buzz Lightyear—one of the protagonists of Pixar’s “Toy Story” franchise.)

I’ve got a great idea, let’s take every moderately successful idea, then absolutely beat it to death. Just miserably beat it down. Then keep beating it once it’s dead.

They need to quit fricking around and give me my Major Matt Mason movie before Tom Hanks dies of old age.

Wow, the lack of originality is staggering. Guess that's what happens when you create an autocratic business model ruled by censorship, group think, and punishment of those with different opinions. Burn baby burn. Also, Tom Hanks please crawl in a hole and die. I would be happy to never see his smug face on the screen again.

How is this a lack of originality when most of these IPs have never seen the big screen?

Because it’s harvesting an existing property. Of course some of the greatest films of all times are adaptations. But it feels like that is ALL we get today save a few stories. Adaptations or sequels to a bigger universe.
Outside of Tarantino/Wes Anderson/Nolan, i can’t remember the last time I went to a one off, to just enjoy the movies that had its own singular story.

I mean, it's pretty easy to never see his smug face on the screen. You're not forced to watch any of his movies.

Do you know how many of your favorite movies are based off of existing literature?

I did. I'm just trying to understand when you got to the point where you grew tired of Hollywood's rehashing. I can't imagine a time in your life where things were different. Hollywood has always tried to bring to life on film what required thought and imagination.
Additionally, these people are driven by money above all (rightfully so). This forum went twerk crazy for Top Gun 2 and Super Mario Bros. Hollywood tries to deliver what the audience will pay for.

The vast majority of these will never be made.

This would be great as kids films. If they're going to make them all adult-focused like this Barbie movie then I doubt I'll have much interest.

How does Mattel own rights for some of these characters from tv shows/cartoons that they made toys for?

He Man was already made. Dolph Lundgren played He Man in a crappy film.

They have nothing in the same league as Barbie as a product, though. This idea is doomed to fail.

It depends on how they treat the property. I could see a Hot Wheels production being successful in the way Cars has been for Pixel with the right director/right production.
Mattel also owns American Girl, I could see someone making something based on that property.
