This might anger some of his fan boys.

Joaquin Phoenix

Has no clue how to portray confidence in a character, and it bleeds through in every role. He even turned Johnny Cash into a sniveling little girl. His only attempt to show confidence was to affect a sneer. The reason his acting in The Gladiator, Her, and The Master is considered great by so many is that each of those characters were written as men lacking self confidence.

The fact that every character he plays has this same trait qualifies him for this thread.

Wut? Not sure how you can watch him in a movie like O Brother and think it is nearly the same as him in something like The Ocean's movies.

Many of these I disagree with.

But if you said Michael Cera, I'd be all about it.

Michael Cera.

Seth Rogen and Jay Baruschel are the current worst offenders.

Better question is which actors who are distinguishedly different in every role. I think 90% of actors "act" with the same style and mannerisms in every role.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, right? Jim Carrey is Jim Carrey in every role. Jim Carrey was Jim Carrey in Truman Show. Truman Show =/= Ace Ventura.

Just because a guy is basically a version of himself in every role (Tommy Lee Jones) doesn't make him a bad actor. Thats what makes DDL such a talented guy.

To be honest, most "movie stars" fall into this category, which makes the merely competent, character actors like Daniel Day Lewis look like geniuses, because they are the only high-profile actors who are actually acting.

The bar ain't high these days.

This. And although he isn't the biggest offender, Hanks probably the one with the most discrepancy between range and profile.

The issue is that 90% of actors play themselves or a slight alteration of themselves in every single role. Very, very few actors are actually good at playing something different. Acting is often more about the ability to invoke genuine emotional response in the audience that they connect with in some way rather than "taking on another persona," as people mostly use the term to mean. This is why "star power" is important. If Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks can make their fake actions seems genuine and connect with the audience, then they have a certain power over them.... that's why these guys are so popular, and also why they never go far outside of their comfort zone. That's what connects. It has nothing to do with "playing someone different."

This is also why people go nuts over Oldman, DDL, etc., those guys actually become different people.
