Posted by Message shinerfan A question after finishing A Dance with Dragons (Spoilers) He appears to be the alchemist in the prologue of AFFC and then Pate the Pig Boy later in the book but its never stated right out.
Grrm never states anything outright

Help me out here... Where is Jaqen? My memory is really failing me or I glossed over it in the book.
Yeah, as mentioned, in the prologue of AFFC the young guy Pate is killed by a mysterious person who is bribing him with a gold coin. When he asks to see the guys face, the description of the mysterious person fits the description of Jaqen after he changes his face in front of Arya exactly.
Later in that same book Sam meets Pate in the Citadel, so Pate has clearly been replaced by a Faceless Man. And given the description of the Faceless Man before he changes into Pate it's Jaqen.

I've discussed most of this stuff for 5 years, in some cases longer. I used to be a long time member of Westeros before they went through multiple board updates/relocations. None of these theories are new to me, except for the ADWD stuff.
I rushed through that and have yet to re-read, but I am enjoying all the theories and debate on that novel. I always do enjoy reading a member's reaction finding out something new, just missing the hints in the books.

It's not easy to catch. You have to be able to remember specific descriptions that Martin makes books before:
The Alchemist:
quote:
A young mans face, ordinary, with full cheeks and the shadow of a beard. A scar showed faintly on his right cheek. He had a hooked nose, and a mat of dense black hair that curled tightly around his ears
Jaqen:
quote:
Jaqen passed a hand down his face from forehead to chin, and where it went he changed. His cheeks grew fuller, his eyes closer; his nose hooked, a scar appeared on his right cheek where no scar had been before. And when he shook his head, his long straight hair, half red and half white, dissolved away to reveal a cap of tight black curls

Good lord. I would have never caught that. Ok, time to re-read.....carefully.

Yeah, 11 years or so since ASOS and 6 or so since AFFC leaves alot of time for rereads and discussing things on Westeros and with friends. Still fun to discuss all the theories.

Especially now that Jaqen is there for some odd reason. What the hell does that guy have up his sleeve?
Maesters soup?

Just finished DwD, and finally understand the whole R+L=J
Something I saw in the book that I am sure has been discussed somewhere, but Jon Connington seemed to be very friendly with Rheagar. Maybe Jon's namesake?

Now that I think about it again, your probably right. After Jon Arryn.

I'm holding out for a Jon and Val hookup. That along with an Arya and Gendry hookup. Both would make me happy.
All this shipping and no San/San reference? For shame.

You know you are truly hooked when you find yourself at a bar in a heated argument with your brother about who is to blame for starting the war of 5 kings. Good times.
