It was ok. Not In the same universe as the original. What I liked best and what I think saved the movie is that they brought back all the original kid actors to reprise their roles. With the exception of Melinda Dillon who played the mom in the original, they did a great job of using the original actors.
Yeah I agree.
I watched it without watching any of the trailers. At the beginning when Ralphie talks about his parents coming over, I was like no way they cast someone else to play The Old Man. Then when the get the call I got choked up.
The original is my favorite Christmas movie of all time and I can watch it over and over. This one was cool to watch but not something I'll watch a bunch of times.

Pretty cool, didn't know that. Wife and I just watched last night and really enjoyed it. Definitely corny but had some genuine moments.
CSB - I was a producer on Trigger Happy TV back in the early 2000's. We went to NOLA one season to shoot, which was as fun as could be for me. I hired friends to be plushies and PA's and such. Anyway, Peter was a producer on one of our episodes as he was just getting going directing and such and he and I spent a few days together scouting. I took him to Bud's Broiler at one point because we were near and he really wanted a burger . The best was taking the crew to my dad's house who kills in the kitchen and did seafood for the guys. I was having anxiety though as I figured my dad was going to start with the Ralphie shite, but he knew I'd be pissed

The more of the new crop of Christmas specials and movies that I watch, the more that I appreciate this sequel. So far, nothing has come close.
Such a great tribute to Darren McGavin's character. The Old Man who seemed to be off in his own world while his wife raised his children, but in fact was very in tune with his kids' lives (and his grandchildren's lives as well). Makes you wonder if he was truly oblivious to little Ralphie's fight and tirade of cursing, and his breaking his glasses with the BB gun, or if he just knew when it was best to step in and when to let Ralphie learn on his own.
It's something that Shepherd went to a few times in his stories (Ralphie thinking he had ruined things or was in despair, and the Old Man quietly coming to the rescue).

This movie was fantastic. I don't think they could have done a better job.

I watched it over the weekend. I enjoyed it. Story wise, it was lacking a little, but not bad. But man, the way it was shot, dialogued, and presented was just perfect for me. The way they told the stories, showed the flashbacks, and (even more so) the way they showed Ralph's "stories" from his head.....I really liked it.

Watched last night with the wife.
Absolutely loved it. Brought a tear to the eye as well.

I haven't seen the sequel yet and only discovered the original as an adult. Recall that this was a reasonably big budget holiday film and they targeted Jack Nicholson for the old man. They "ended up" with McGavin who, obviously, hit homerun after homerun in the role (despite being a bit too old for the role, I mean he was 60 opposite early 40s Melinda Dillon with grade school kids).
I love Jack. I certainly wouldn't have swapped him for McGavin in A Few Good Men, Cuckoo's Nest, The Shining, any of Jack's iconic roles, but I just can't imagine him coming close to McGavin's near perfection in this role.
Reminds me of the great Paul Dooley in Breaking Away in many ways. Neither of those performances are talked about enough in "greatest supporting role" of all time.

The ending is very smart.

Per my post on page 1 I thought this would suck but left it very pleasantly surprised. They did about as good a job you could do for how much time has passed since the original. Did anyone notice they even gave a subtle reference to the piece of shite Christmas story 2? It was during the “jail” daydream and they say “dead man walking!” In CS2 he has a daydream where they say that.

She's like an American Rose Byrne. She was great in this, but the little daughter stole the show.
Only the most eagle-eyed fans of the OG spotted the Chinese restaurant on the left of the alley where the Christmas tree lot was.

I was hoping that going to the Chinese restaurant became a tradition after CS1, with the Christmas duck and the Asian carolers.

Just finished it. Great nostalgia and it really hits you in the feels...at least it did for me because I lost my dad a few years ago.
