he was certainly not a star you bet $140M in production budget on at that time

hell, outside of POTC derivatives, i wouldn't bet on depp bringing in a profitable movie from a movie with a $140M budget

Agreed completely. One of the best casts of all time, good plot, mediocre execution. Some of the scenes were VERY poorly done, with an ambiance/musical score that don't fit the mood at all.

What movie in that list is geared toward the dopey general public or was a world-wide Box office smash?

Right before Pirates came calling, Depp was filming Don Quixote with Terry Gilliam - Don Quixote! with Terry "Baron Munchausen" Gilliam! A movie that cost $42 million to make and grossed $8 million - and there's Depp in Don Quixote - a film that was never completed due to funding. Movies starring big names don't lack for funding.

Pirates made Depp a world-wide star...he wasn't one before.

Point is, he was an established actor. And IF it was presented with the cast established, which I doubt it was, the ensemble they put together was pretty impressive. Depp, Kightley, Rush, Knightley etc. Doubt the movie was cast before the production compan gave them the go ahead anyways.

I agree about A. I. I walked out of the theater wishing Speilberg had had the balls to end it with Haley Joel stuck at the bottom of the ocean.

Also, I thought Unbreakable was perfect just the way it was. So underrated. Finally, I'm pretty sure the writer(or one them anyway) did direct Natural Born Killers. QT came up with the story idea, but I don't think he wrote the screenplay. Pretty sure stone did.

A.I. - NY Press film critic (and Rotten Tomatoes punching bag) Armond White ranked it the greatest movie of all time in Sight and Sound.

Tarantino wrote the script but it was later revised by Oliver Stone and QT absolutely hated that he turned it into a fricked up satire on mass media.

I actually kinda liked NBK though it still would have been interesting to see QT's take on it.

Johnny Depp certainly brought star power to POTC and helped it get greenlit. Him being associated with that film allowed them to get the other big name actors on board. Depp is known for his quirky roles rather than his blockbuster roles, but that was his personal choice. He's never been interested in big budget movies. It's not that he hasn't been offered those roles time and time again. He is well respected by his peers as one of the best actors around.

I think his point was that Eric Furlong was such a **** in that movie, if it had been set 4 more years in the future, they could have picked an older, less annoying actor. Watching the movie again makes me agree.

Wait. So John Connor is only 10 years old in T2? Never even thought about the year it was set just thought of it more as being set "when John was like 14" like Edward furlong was.

That actually is a plot hole.

I agree with this. The movie could've been so great with better direction/screenwriting. i enjoyed the premise of it, but it was executed terribly

I agree the premise was great, but if the execution, writing, and directing were all missing, how can it be an "almost classic?" I agree that all those were missing, but I can't agree that it's an almost classic. That's like saying "If it weren't for those two touchdowns we allowed at the beginning of the second half and then that fumble at the end of 3rd Quarter, we woulda had em!" Really? Just take a loss and shut it.

Not saying you were advocating for Unbreakable to be on the list, just advocating that I think it shouldn't be.

I agree that Unbreakable and the Devil's Advocate aren't close to being classic - terribly flawed movies.

A lot of Cruise movie's feel classic but are not quite there - I would add Minority Report to the list and take off Unbreakable.
