re: 1980s TV Shows are awesome. Why don't they make them like they use to?

That's what I'm talking about. They just don't make TV like that anymore.

...

Those shows are insanely tame by today's standards.
No profanity.
No sex.
Minimal violence.

Seinfeld was edgier than 80s police dramas.

Y'all are forgetting the best one, "Dukes of Hazzard." I credit my excellent driving skills to Bo and Luke.

I've been watching the first season of Miami Vice lately. Never seen it before. I bet living in Miami back then was wild.

Yep. They were trying to cash in on the Raiders of the Lost Ark success. I think Stephen Collins was the lead.

I never even knew about this show until the past few weeks. Besides introducing story arcs it's also a damn good show.

Watching episodes of CHiPs right now.
Why dont they make TV shows like these anymore?
Example:
CHips
Dallas
Air Wolf
Fall Guy

Terrible list when we had:

Cheers
Hill Street Blues
Night Court
Newhart
Miami Vice
Married With Children
MacGyver
China Beach
Moonlighting
Magnum, P.I.
The Facts Of Life

We had a year of Quantum Leap and Seinfeld, Two Years of The Wonder Years. Three years of Taxi.

I think TV nowadays is better in every way than what we had in the 80s.

It also had great casting.

Ken Wahl, Jonathan Banks, and Jim Byrnes as the primary cast but also brought in guys like Kevin Spacey, Paul Winfield, Tim Curry, and Jerry Lewis for arcs.

From a casting perspective, it was The Shield about two decades ahead of its time because Shield later brought in actors like Anthony Anderson, Glenn Close, and Forrest Whitaker for runs of no more than about 16 episodes.

I associate Chips with a 70's show,

It did debut in 77, and ran until 83 so that's fair.

I loved it as a kid, but tried to watch an episode a few years ago and it has not held up well at all.

I grew up in the 70s. You're letting nostalgia cloud your judgement.

That 70’s Show debuted in 1998, and was set in 1976.
If a show came out today in 2019 with the same premise, it would be set in 1997.

neither was there as many awful shows being made then as are being made now.

I think this is only true because there are a lot more outlets putting shows out there today. Across the 3 major networks in the 80's, there were plenty of awful TV shows.

Just like Happy Days set in the 50’s aired in the 70’s.

And

Wonder Years set in the 60’s aired in the 80’s.

Is it the Goldberg's out now set in the 90’s?
