Am I the only person who can't stand Citizen Kane? And it's not because it's an old black and white movie or anything like that. Some of my favorites are from that era... Casablanca, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, etc. I just find Citizen Kane exceptionally boring, and I can find something interesting in almost any well-made movie (cinematography, sound, you get the point).

Start here...in that order.

And after reading the rest of the thread, I'm stunned at how many people haven't seen The Godfather.

You are not alone. I enjoyed the movie more on subsequent watchings, but it's not for everyone. Among other things, part of the problem is that the modern audience doesn't really get the historical reference, and there's really no one to like or to "root for".

I've never seen the Maltese Falcon, and there's really no good excuse.

I saw parts of Great Expectations, and it was good, but it didn't live up to novel, IMO. I know that's the universal response regarding books and their subsequent movies, but that doesn't make it true. I wonder if I would have enjoyed the movie more if I hadn't read the book. Probably so.

I wouldn't consider Citizen Kane to be one of my favorite movies of all-time, but objectively, it is really great and a huge influence on cinema.

victory11, Sounds like you've seen some of them on non-premium cable channels. These should be seen uncut. The AMC version gives you the gist of the story but some of the best scenes get butchered.

I don't think of the Godfather movies as old but I guess they are. Hopefully no one saw III and decided to skip I & II.

It's a shame many haven't seen these and many more great films in a theater.

"Vertigo" is the only one I haven't seen.
"Bonnie & Clyde" was a waste of my time.
Could'nt rewatch "Deer Hunter", too dark for me.

I can understand you not seeing a lot of movies on the list, but "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"? That movies is on AMC, A&E, or TCM every few days. It's not Shawshank level, but you do not have to go out of your way to see it.

Now is the time of year to catch Casablanca. Find a small theater that is screening it for Valentine's days and take the SO. You guys will both have a great time and you can cross one off the list. She might even think you are romantic.

Proof before the sequels that Star Wars was a fluke.

The frick are you waiting for?

quote:

Casino

Very memorable and entertaining even if it is a lot like Goodfellas.

quote:

No Country for Old Men

Slow-moving but very tense thriller. One of the best antagonists in an American film.

quote:

Casablanca

Not as high on it as most people but it's still vintage Bogart.

quote:

Citizen Kane

Watched this recently for the first time in years. Absolutely brilliant in how influential the techniques are. Many American films owe a great debt to this movie.

quote:

The Departed

One of Scorsese's best, and he's made a lot of good ones. I have no clue how this was the only one to win Best Picture.
