Making shows deeper or less generic almost by definition narrows their appeal.

and people wonder why reality shows are so popular on tv

they cost very little to make, and a good one will make you hundreds of millions of dollars every year

That explains why they are popular with network execs but that doesn't explain why they are popular with the public. The public doesn't care how much they cost to make or what the return is.

Surprised 2 and 1/2 Men wasn't higher on the list. That being said, this list is no surprise. The American public is generally stupid.

I find it interesting. I know tons of people who watch American Idol and I can't name one person I know who watches Survivor. Is Survivor's viewership mostly older people?

It really shocks me that Lost was even made and finished on it's own terms with this list. The show may have been the most expensive show in history (it's Pilot had more than double the budget of any other Pilot to this day) and it didn't have a ridiculous number of viewers, especially in the later half. The only explanation I can come up with are DVD sales, which are one of the strongest out of all TV shows.

The seasons of survivor listed are mostly from the first half of the decade. Surely you knew somebody who watched it then.

The American Idol love always surprises me. Had a family BBQ this weekend and all of the over-50 women were talking in detail about the current contestants and the show. How can that be the way they want to spend their time? There were lots of "he can really sing" type of comments. Well, no crap. Are they surprised that talented singers are drawn to a show that gives them a very good shot of signing a record deal?

Scrubs and Lost are the only 2 shows only the list that I have ever seen.

I do not understand how people watch reality TV.

It was the only show that didn't hide some bullshite excuse, it really was about people trying to screw each other, literally and figuratively. In those respects, it should be honored.

I hadn't watched an episode of American Idol in probably 4 years because the talent was getting pretty terrible but I watched the other day and was impressed. It's borderline worth watching again if that's your thing.

to the status quo

(I was going to say to the American public, but a lot of these shows were European inventions in the first place)
