What a joke. And I know a lot of posters love the NBA, but y’all can admit that the projections were WAY WAY OFF.

They thought because of the growth of yo yo yo thug culture in the US it meant the N.B.A. was going to become the dominant league.

Turns out you need more than a shite product to dominate the market.

Use to always watch Christmas Day forward and almost all of the playoffs. Watched a little of the finals one of the last times golden state won but otherwise I haven’t watched in almost 10 years. Stars became soft and just doesn’t seem like anyone gives a shite anymore, no one is developed in college so you don’t know any of the young guys and thus don’t really care about them either

NBA got lucky with Magic, Bird and Jordan.

They didn't even have Primetime games in the 70s....they weren't even frickin' live TV games.

When Jordan abruptly retired early, the 1994 NBA All-Star Game viewership, experienced a 40.3% decrease. Half the fans retired too.

It was always a fragile League dependent on less than a handful of stars people liked.

Fans are tired of paying ridiculous prices to go to games & there is almost a 50% chance the star players aren’t even going to play.

and when they do actually play, it's blatantly obvious that they're not giving 100% unless it's the playoffs or a prime time / holiday game.

maybe 10-12 games per team of the NBA's 82-game regular season is worth watching. the rest of the games are just players and coaches going through the motions and them counting down the minutes before they can leave the arena.

fully guaranteed contracts and a league that allows the players to run things has created this horrible culture.

It was not this bad 20 and 30 years ago. Hell, it wasn’t this bad 10 years ago.

We didn't know how good we had it with those Lebron vs Warriors finals. Say what you want about those coaches and players but that kind of felt like the last time we got to see serious competitors and some intensity in the NBA. I watched those games but these days I'd have a hard time answering if you asked me who was in the last 5 NBA finals.

I'm convinced that most of the fans of the Association are more interested in the soap opera side of the NBA (who's dissing whom, who knocked up which instathot, trade rumors, beefs of the week, etc) than they are of the game itself.

I mean the Luka trade reaction pretty much proved this.

The game, the sport as constructed, especially now, really isn't that popular to watch given all the options.

It never was THAT popular except for a few superstars that people liked.... (Not you LeBron).

NFL
CFB

Hockey (live , in person)*

MLB (while drinking a beer, mowing the lawn)

European Soccer, I guess, because we all hate Commercials now.

NBA if you're in a nursing home and can't change the Channel while your Jello is jiggling by your bedside table.

I was fooled in the late 90s, back when the NBA Finals drew a record almost-30-million eyeballs, that the NBA might one day take it's turn as "America's Game", much like football did from baseball.

But the numbers were never really possible, even in arguable peak NBA eras, from Nielsen ratings to stadium capacities. It was never gonna happen. Especially now, where the game, the players & the politics are relatively repelling.

I can agree with this. I root for my team, but the product overall has sucked for years. Players are also too soft too. Load management sucks, all the 3s are lame.

Premier league football should be #1 on the list. It’s the greatest league in the world

They also have a lot of issues. But I do love that they don’t price their fans out of going to games. I paid £45 to sit fifth row center at an Arsenal match. Couldn’t believe it.

The NBA dominated pro sports in the 80's and early 90's.

NBA probably wasn’t also betting on Jontay Porter either

Or cord cutting

Ironically they had positioned themselves the best for cord cutting, especially where MLB could not get it's shite together on their platform.

About 10 years ago to a little after Covid it felt like the NBA was about to start really dominating. This last four to five years have just killed the momentum and I'm not sure why.

They thought that but it basically has killed ESPN and TNT viewership and especially Inside The NBA
