I can’t remember the last time the ref ruled the ball uncatchable.

The NFL has tried to eliminate some judgement calls the last few years as they have added more penalties onto the rule book, and emphasized other judgment calls like roughing the passer.

There is no definitive definition of “uncatchable”, and receivers make spectacular catches every week. The NFL wants to prevent what happened in the Washington-Arizona State game where a flag was picked up because the pass was controversially called uncatchable.

So, it now has to be something about as obvious as a QB throwing the ball away into the stands before it’s ruled uncatchable. The rule is still on the books, but referees are hesitant to apply it.

picking-up the flag on holding calls where the defensive player wasn’t in a position to make the tackle?

intentional grounding

They are entirely too lenient on this rule. If a QB is in the pocket and throws the ball out of the end zone into the stands, that should be grounding. Throwing a ball at a RB's feet on a blown up screen play should be grounding.

I would also like to see targeting called on offensive players who lower their heads sometimes (I'd actually prefer targeting to go away entirely but that won't happen). I'd love to see RBs get flagged for a face mask or an illegal hands to the face when they throw a stiff arm and hit the defender in the face.

If the ball is uncatchable, then the defender didn’t interfere with the receivers ability to catch it. The QB did

Then QBs would automatically throw the ball 20 yards past any reciever. It's free yardage. The NFL would become an even worse flag snoozefest.

What I would be in favor of is losing automatic first downs. 3rd and 35, defensive holding 7 yards deep on a short pass, should not be an automatic first down.

Nah. They need these insane rules so they can continue to alter games. It is beyond obvious what they are doing, and this year seems more blatant than previous years.

I would rather they call more balls uncatchable especially the ones that are way underthrown. You see this all the time - ball is underthrown to the point the WR has no chance of catching it, he stops dead in his tracks, the DB runs into him, PI, first down. Stupid.

I’m generally in favor of fewer flags rather than more so yea I would be okay with picking up flags where the hold happens away from the play.

Same here. If a nit-picking penalty occurs away from a play that would have absolutely no consequence to the play, then pick up the flag.

How many times have we seen great runs called back because a tight end grabbed a D-backs jersey for 1 seconds on the other side of the field totally away from the play.

Get rid of intentional grounding. If the offense wants to burn a down throwing the ball away, then fine.

There are already so many acceptable methods: clocking it, out of the pocket, etc. Just do away with the rule. It's too subjective anyway.
