Elgin Baylor's attorney is on cowherd right now

aka, a return to normalcy
The Clippers have become one of the most popular teams in the league with two of the biggest star players. You don't think the NBA would lose money if they fell apart?
Just because they sucked before doesn't mean the NBA won't care if they lose their TV deal and a majority of their sponsorships and players won't sign there.
Not saying all that will happen but I guess you could say that is worst case scenario.

not really

they had no problem doing this with a racist owner the past, oh, 30 years or so

colbert definitely said the "ching chong" stuff on air
Oh ok
For some reason I thought it was all over a tweet

i think the tweet came after and aroused the ire of the tw'ack-tovist, but the original clip had the "ching chong" language

No owners actually want this to get to a vote to remove him. They just want to publicly reprimand him in order to try to look they care and to save sponsorships. They don't want to set that modern day precedent.

The Comedy Central people tweeted his quote

that is not actual damages, and if that's the standard then it's about a 1000x worse slippery slope
Well I'm sure the NBA and their lawyers can figure out a way to show how that lead to actual damages.

and they don't want to vote, b/c people will vote no, and then, racism

quote:I didn't think so either. Seems clearly that something that affects the team getting the sponsors. I haven't read of ANY sponsor dropping all NBA advertising or sponsorship because it's not worth it and they don't have another large platform to replace the loss of advertising.
i'm like 99% sure it's not. people got pissed at the lakers' mega deal a couple years back
Also the Colbert thing started because of a tweet:
quote:
After an intro in which Colbert, clad in Redskins gear, had a nightmare featuring a cameo by actor B.D. Wong, the host dove right into the debacle. He explained that the joke originated in a segment about Snyder's charity that was rebroadcast multiple times on Thursday without incident. It was only when his show's promotional Twitter account repeated the joke, without a link to the segment or a mention of Snyder's charity, on Thursday night, that a backlash ensued.

Well I can't watch it now, I'm in class
I'll take your word for it
And I can't imagine that the NBA would just be ok with letting the Clippers become the laughing stock of professional sports again. I'd have to imagine that their rise was good for the league.

slippery slope. hell we don't know even know what groups will claim victimhood in the future (to where our comments today will be offensive in retrospect). smart owners understand this
A slippery slope would be "We don't like this guy so lets throw him under the bus and get rid of him." The league is not throwing Sterling under the bus, he threw himself there, they just aren't trying to stop the bus. If Sterling were just an employee he'd have been fired already for all the damage he's caused to the brand. The precedent set if they go this route will be clear, don't become a negative news story.

Correct. A vote is their worst nightmare about this thing. They just want to make people think they care.
Fwiw, I think he should have been nudged to sell the team a long time ago. Yeah he's been turning a profit but it's basketball in Los Angeles, Shinn could even run a profitable franchise with his hippie children over there.

That's akin to the old "massa clothes us, he feeds us..." line of thought from more oppressive times.
Just for logical consistency, no plantation slaves voluntarily went to Tara as CP and Doc did the LAC. To me, they have somewhat compromised their right to moral outrage.

Silver "exploring the nuclear option" is a PR move trying to show people that the league is really against this guy.

He isn't just an employee though.
Sterling is a racist piece of shite and I certainly will take some satisfaction if he's forced to sell but I agree with Cuban and others in here in that I don't like the precedent it sets

They had no power to change the situation before, they think they do now. This isn't hypocrisy, this is a coup attempt.

Sterling is no employee. he's the longest-tenured owner of an NBA franchise.
