I'm 55. My son is a senior and has been playing since the 6th grade. He's been starting varsity since the 9th grade, single A football. He's a good, physical player who has never been hurt, but its football and he knows the risk. It would hypocritical of me to watch college and pro football on weekends and not have let him play in high school.

In my 30s. Yes. And I am sure I am in the minority on this board. I actually played football. By far the most fun of all the sports. And no one has provided evidence football causes CTE.

I’m 43. My son played from 4yr old flag football in TX through Freshman year at Neville. He was ok. Not great but didn’t get a ton of playing time at Neville so he quit to focus on Baseball. He doesn’t miss it at all and I’m not disappointed. He’s had 2 concussions and multiple ankle injuries from football. I would never keep him from playing but not disappointed that he quit.

Tough question. Wouldn’t have any issue with them playing young but the problem would be if they were good enough to play in college or passed that.
Two of my best friends played SEC football in college and one of them is fine today and the other can barely remember what he ate for breakfast (seriously). He also played a few years in the NFL so that could play in to it as well. I have asked him this question and he has a young son who he says will be sticking to golf and baseball.
I would be fine with my son playing HS football if there was nothing for him beyond that.

My son is 5 and he’s in his second season of soccer, next year he will start his first year of T-ball plus soccer but he won’t be playing football. I honestly don’t trust the people that run the association where I live, nothing personal but we know a lot more now than we did 20 years ago. I never thought I would feel like this but I guess it’s different when it’s your son out there. I have no problem with flag football if he wants to play but its going to be several years before he plays tackle football.

Yes. Concussions aren't from kids. Muscles and force develop a lot later than skeletal structure. Adults hitting adults is far more dangerous than kids hitting kids. Those 100 poun pre-pubescent kids aren't nearly violent enough to do the same type of brain damage that 200+ pound freaks do.
Joe Rogan talks about this frequently. And he's not a YOLO type on this. He quit high-level martial arta at 21 bc he knew he was damaging his brain. And he is a big proponent of young kids learning how to fight being much safer bc the kids aren't strong enough to damage each other's brains......
Of course, skulls and whatnot get more resilient as kids age. But not to the same degree that offensive destructive power increases. Its why heavyweights have astronomically more knockouts than light-weights despite having better chins. Skelakatur resiliency can't keep up with power.

My middle son just started playing in 7th grade for the first time. Made 7th grade A team as a Kicker and WR/CB. His love is baseball. Both me and my wife told him if ever he wants to not play football, we will not be upset. Unless of course I can gravy train off of his right leg later on as a Kicker. Lol

40, yes I hope they play, but it’ll be flag football until middle school. Same as I did.

I know a couple of former college/pro guys that live near me and they would not let their kids play in pads until the 7th grade - it was all about injuries. They did play flag and travel basketball and were heads and tails better than everyone. Ha.
I've see too many kids get hurt playing youth football. Anyway, it is a laughing stock most of the time - funny seeing grown men trying to act like mini-Sabans/Malzahns to 8 year olds. It is taken waaaay too seriously at times here. It's stupid.
Edit: My wife just told me that her cousin's son was playing QB for his youth team last week and hurt his leg because no one knew how to block for him - having surgery now.
If you want your kids to be tough - get them involved in youth wrestling first. I did with one of mine and he stayed in it through college. I had zero worries about trouble for I knew he could take someone down in 5 seconds as well.

I knew people like this. They never made it past 2 a days. Way behind on basic technique and understanding. Also hadn't ever got their bell rung or the snot knocked out of 'em, at least by starting younger you ease your way into it.
What a bunch of BS. Only one position in football that requires anything other than pure athletic ability and/or motivation. QB. All other positions can be picked up with the quickness at any time. Nothing worse then seeing a bunch of elementary school kids in full pads. What a waste of time.

38. My six year old is playing his first year of tackle football after playing flag last year. He loves it. I’m amazed at the level of play of a bunch of kindergarteners and 1st graders.

I’m 37. Son is 5. If he wants to play I have no issue with it. I have a buddy who was an excellent soccer player and sustained 3 concussions in hs. I had friends who were concussed in HS wrestling.
I doubt any of my kids would play a lifetime of hard hitting football given their genetics
This is kinda how I feel. I see these little kids at the park playing and it’s essentially a bunch of kids bumping pads while they chase the fast kid. Then I see my little dude jumping out of the tree house, falling off his bike when learning to ride a two wheeler, etc and the youth football looks pretty damn safe in comparison.

I played football and basketball in HS; I started late on baseball, which means I was way behind, even though it's my favorite sport (many felt that this would have been my best sport had I started earlier). My parents were leery, but I convinced them that it was ok. I suffered an injury in my senior year. I knew the risks, and I decided that the benefits far outweighed the risks. You learn a lot being on a football team.
I do not have children yet, but I would make sure that they understood the pros and cons about each sport. I believe in allowing my kids to make some choices, but live through the consequences.

I Have a friend that was a starting lineman in the league for 15 years. He was asked this question on Facebook the other day and he stood firm on 12 years old. No ifs, ands, or buts. I was a bit surprised at how adamant he was about it.

Again, pretty much what I hear from my friends who played football in college and beyond say. One guy, who played at AU, had the biggest kid in the school still would not do it until age 12 (or 7th grade organized ball) with real trainers/coaches/refs). He is dominating. Great kid and family too.
