Watson doesn't have any of Phil's personality. That shite matters. Arnie is so beloved bc of his personality combined with his wins

This.

Phil is this generation's Arnie.

Watson was way more popular than Phil was, especially internationally and even more especially by other players.

They played a very different style of golf however. So maybe a fan would prefer to watch one over the other. Nothing wrong with that.

Either way, there's room for both Phil and Watson in the top 10 (assuming Jones, Hagen, Snead, Hogan, Arnie, Player, Jack and Tiger have the other spots locked down).

IMO, the 10th spot comes down to Phil versus:

Gene Sarazen
Byron Nelson
Lee Trevino

For who? He doesn't move the needle at all for non-golf fans. He didn't hit it big on any endorsements. Watson is a great golfer but boring AF.

Watson and Mickelson are completely different players, but they also have a lot of similarities.

Both broke onto the scene in their early 20’s and were immediate fan favorites because of their aggressive style of play. Both contended for majors, but had disappointing finishes early in their career. Both were known for their mastery around the green. Both have over 25 top 5 finishes in majors.

The difference is that Watson was able to win his first major only a couple of years after his first disappointing finish, while it took Phil nearly a decade to break through.

Phil is known for his aggressive play off the tee, and going for it on Par 5s. Watson would attack pins on his approach shots instead of aiming for the safe play in the middle of the green.

Phil is a wizard with a wedge around the green. Watson was deadly with his putter from any distance.

I mean, dude has won 5 majors(should of had 6) and was the #2 ranked golfer in the world for the netter part of a decade and a half. Yeah, he's top-10 all time.

The two of y’all seem to each have one edge of the range he should fall into. He’s certainly belongs the discussion for the top ten, though a case could be made that there were ten guys better. He’s top 15 for sure.

I see some hints that Phil is above or equal to Watson.

Let’s tap the brakes. Watson has 3 more majors and absolutely dominated the world’s biggest tournament, winning it 5 times in 9 years. Then almost winning it again in his late 50s! He also has the career slam.

Phil does belong in the top 10. I always put him in Trevino’s class but now he has the edge on Lee who’s Achilles was Augusta.

I don't believe you ever watched him or have a clue what you're talking about, he may well be the most popular player ever in Britain. Which is incredible since he's American.

You don't know shite about frick, respectfully.

Dude was internationally one of the most popular golfers as an American and is STILL getting major endorsements as a geriatric.

Golf as a whole was just different before Tiger. It wasn't as mainstream, something Phil has thanked Tiger for countless times.

Watson also repped Polo for a while as well.

He was my favorite golfer for a long time because he is a huge duck hunter in the off season and truly a classy guy.

It would be interesting to actually run numbers and compare Watson and Phil as far as recognition level and fandoms

I don’t really know.

Tom was beloved worldwide at a time when golf wasn’t quite as big as it is now. However his domination of the Open has him at rock star status on the island.

But Phil was essentially the other side of the coin of the 90s explosion of golf popularity with Tiger.

That’s an very interesting conversation.
One guy huge fish in a smaller pond. Other guy huge pond allowing for a large fish to grow?

I like these discussions.
