Which of those above do you throw out to put Mickelson in?

Here’s the thing...people (not saying you specifically) who put Tiger #1 over Jack, often cite the different eras and the depths of today’s fields as the tipping point despite Jack’s edge in majors. If Tiger gets that benefit, then Phil has to get it too. Therefore that needs to be judged when comparing him to Palmer, Player, Watson etc.

The flip side of that is that today's golfers have access to all kinds of coaching and data aids, greens and yardage books, and nutrition and exercise science that golfers from the Nicklaus age and before did not have. How much of that factors into the depth of the fields?

Assuming Phil doesn't blow a chance to win a major at the age of 59.

If you think he was the 2nd best golfer of his era then he's Top 10.

Because Tiger dominated, it's easy just to have him as the lone rep from 2000-2020 but that's absurd when golf has been at its highest level than ever before.

This is a dumb take. There have only been 5 golfers to ever win the career grand slam.

No.

Jones, Sarazen, Hagen, Snead, Nelson, Hogan, Arnie, Jack, Tiger (in no order) which leaves
Phil to battle it out with Watson and Trevino with some younger guys already lurking.

No question. His numbers are there. And he’s the ultimate showman.

Top 10 for sure. The man is also pure class, all around good for the sport, and has a hell of a nice shot.

Clyde Drexler is a name I haven't heard in a long damn time.

Big fan of him growing up.

not about that. The US Open is a big deal. I don’t know if you can be top 10 without it

Nobody beats Tiger or even comes close in 2001 and I won't argue about it.

This is the issue with this discussion. Tiger fans want the discussion to be about at their best and Jack fans want best career.

54 career wins is hard to overlook. Trevino had 34 (pga and Euro) which is pretty stout and many put him on the periphery of the top ten.

It’s hard to compare his career to Trevino’s. Lee was in the Marine Corps in his early 20’s, then had to hussle matches to earn a living. He was close to 30 before he joined the tour.

Meanwhile, Phil was able to join the tour straight out of college because of his victory at Phoenix as an amateur.

However, I don’t think Phil’s longevity should be held against him. He started winning early, and kept winning until he was nearly 50.

He has 44 PGA victories, and 2 on the European tour. (He gets credited with 10 Euro tour victories because his majors and World Golf Championships are sanctioned by both tours.)

In addition to winning 46 tournaments and 5 majors, he has 3 WGC victories, 1 Player’s Championship, 38 top 10 finishes in majors, 27 top 5, and has been a mainstay on Ryder and Presidents Cup teams for 25 years.

And that's the thing about Tiger. Europeans wins seldom get counted on his side of the ledger and the guy was inhuman overseas as well. Tiger has 41 European wins to go along with his 82 PGA wins. Do the math? The guy seldom stuck his toe into the European tour and is currently 3rd all-time in wins.

Sam Snead won a lot of so-called PGA tournaments in his day that wouldn't have counted as exhibition today. Some tourney's 2 rounds and some were counted that they couldn't actually find anyone in them but local patrons. For my money, Jack Nicklaus really had the legit record for actual 4 round PGA caliber tournaments at 73 before he was passed by Tiger.

If someone has trouble remembering that Phil is an all-time top 10 PGA golfer, it's cause he or she simply doesn't want to.

I’d take Seve in his prime...but close.

To be fair, 33 of those 41 Euro winds are counted twice in his PGA tour wins. WGCs and Majors count on both tours.

I think being the last amateur to win a PGA Tour event puts him there.

I would put him in the Top 10 in the post war era for sure.

But as is the case with most sports, it gets fuzzy when you go further back in time to the pioneering days and the popularity boom eras. I'm not sure where you would wedge him into a list that includes Bobby Jones, Walter Hagan, Gene Sarazen and a bunch of furry Scotsmen.

If he had held it together in one of the many US Opens where victory was in his grasp and completed the Career Grand Slam then I think his place would be more secure. But it's hard to overlook the fact that he was Tiger's bridesmaid by a wide margin for most of his career.

IMO he may be on the cusp of top ten. Here are several players I definitely rank above him:

1&2 Tiger & Jack
3 Ben Hogan
4 Bobby Jones
5 Byron Nelson
5 Sam Snead
7 Gary Player
8 Arnold Palmer

A couple of more who may be equal to or better than Phil:

Dr. Cary Middlecoff
Payne Stewart
