Ohio State underachieved in the regular season relative to their talent level. Oregon almost lost in Eugene. OSU would have won 8 out of 10. Talent matters. OSU had more than Oregon, so despite Ryan Day, OSU destroyed Oregon as expected.

So unless Oregon can up their talent level, no.

Nobody cares about football out here. I don't think that is a huge deal to the players but it's an interesting trend. You go out to bars in SE or NE Portland and they have anime on instead of an Oregon football game

That is a shocker considering the home games for the Ducks are always loud and packed!

As for Oregon, I think Dan Lanning has done a great job and he will continue to get more talent there, especially if Phil Knight puts up money in the NIL.

It's worth noting no new program has won a national championship since Florida in 1996 btw. They were the last "first time" champion.

The most recent "first-time" champions:
1996 - Florida
1993 - Florida State
1991 - Washington
1990 - Colorado
1984 - BYU
1983 - Miami
1982 - Penn State (although their '69 claim has merit)
1981 - Clemson
1970 - Nebraska

It's a small stadium.

So much filtration of coaches to the top. Any “new” program better win it all when they get their shot cause the coaches usually leave right after.

Now with transfer portal they will leave and take half the team with them so it will be even harder.

Virginia Tech had a shot in 1999 and Oregon had had two shots in title games in 2010 and 2014.

As long as Phil Knight lives they'll be in the mix. After that, who knows?
I'm sure Eugene is a nice college town but I how many elite players from SoCal or FL or GA would go there otherwise?

Not to mention there were several schools since that had a legit chance at their first title:

1998 Kansas State
2006 Louisville
2007 West Virginia
2011 Oklahoma State

All 4 suffered an unexpected late-season loss that kept them from the title game.

I think all teams except Oklahoma State win the national title game if they get there.

If this NIL shite continues they have a chance, they can buy their way into the playoffs a lot and eventually may put together a run.

What about aTm then

2021 Cincinnati was in the Playoffs.
2010 Oregon played for a championship for the first time (and lost by 3).
2001 Oregon finished #2 and had a claim to have at least played in the BCSNCG rather than Nebraska (who didn't win their conference and lost their final regular season).
1999 Virginia Tech played for a title, their only time to do so.
1995 Florida played for a title but got ran off the field by the Huskers.

Doesn't matter, you can't buy toughness and Oregon falls apart when things don't go as planned.
