I see a lot of parallels between the two. Both QBs led their team to a Super Bowl appearance in their second year. Both threw two interceptions in an AFC Championship Game loss in their third year. Marino had a dynamic receiving duo with the Marks brothers. Burrow has Chase and Higgins.

Marino never come close to sniffing another Super Bowl after his third season due to cheap ownership not spending the money to put the necessary pieces around him to build a championship contender. Burrow has Mike Brown as his team’s owner who is notoriously stingy with the dollars. Will Burrow’s Bengals end up collapsing like Marino’s Dolphins did?

Are you saying Cincy should bench Burrow from now on?

It is certainly possible especially if he spends his career in Cincinnati.

That being said it is unlikely because Marino is a bit of an anomaly given how great he was. Who are the next three in that ignominious list, Cunningham, Tarkenton, and Kelly? Kelly had his chances (4 straight), Cunningham had too many injuries, and Tark was 0-3 in the big game. Marino IMO was much better than any of those three (though I suppose Tark is arguably closer) so like I said I think Marino was an anomaly despite the rough similarity of Burrow's first three seasons I think Burrow will get his even if it isn't in Cincy.

Marino's more revered and popular than almost every SB winning QB. I mean except for like Montana, Staubach, Unitas.. That's the pantheon he's in. Guy was an absolute God. But ok

I grew up in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Other than Joe Montana, John Elway is the only Marino contemporary whose legend is comparable.

Several of the Super Bowl winning QB’s of Marino’s era were merely good QB’s (sometimes with short stretches of greatness) who had excellent supporting casts. Jim Plunkett, Jim McMahon, Phil Simms, Doug Williams, Jeff Hostetler, Mark Rypien.

Other than those guys, Montana won 3 (Marino era), Aikman 3, Young 1, Favre 1, and Elway 2. And those players, as great as they were, were surrounded by stellar talent too.

Until Elway finally broke through with Terrell Davis and a defense and the Pats dynasty started up a few years later, the AFC used to get the frick beat out of them in the Super Bowl by the NFC. 13 years in a row, IIRC, and only 2 were close.

Those old NFC teams from the mid ‘80s to mid ‘90s were rough. Several teams worthy of all-time great status. 1984/1989/1994 SF, 1985 Bears, 1986 Giants, 1991 Redskins, 1992/1993/1995 Dallas, 1996 Packers.

There was another great QB who had it worse.

Archie Manning.

I like Archie and what he’s meant to the south, but he was not on any of these other guys’ level.

Marino was banging the finest babes that South Beach had to offer. Joe dresses like Cam Newton. Not much in common.

Joe Burrow isn’t near Dan Marino’s level. He’s got a ways to go.

Dan Marino was doing things in 1984, without all of these rules slanted towards the offense, that Joe Burrow can’t do now.

The Saints used to be stingy with the dollars until they had a franchise qb and good coach. I think this culture will change and they will spend the money necessary to keep Joe competitive

He is with the Bengals.

If a great organization like the Steelers, dude would get 2+ SBs.

But they are still the Bengals.
