Will Dak and the Cowboys ever come to an agreement?

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones has said it many times over the years: Deadlines make deals.
If that's the case between the Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott, welcome to at least the fourth deadline in their long-running negotiations that have yet to lead to the multiyear agreement both parties say they want.
Without a long-term deal done by 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, the Cowboys will use the franchise tag on Prescott for the second straight year at a cost of $37.7 million.
When the Cowboys and Prescott's agent, Todd France, started these negotiations in 2019, the team's hope was to get Prescott signed during the offseason program, then in training camp and ultimately by the start of the 2019 regular season.

Which brings us to deadline No. 4 on Tuesday.
There have been discussions between the Cowboys and France that multiple sources have described as "positive," and "good," but it has not closed the gaps to lead to a long-term deal.
Do the Cowboys still insist on five years or would they drop it to four? Does Prescott now want a three-year deal after asking for a four-year agreement last year? The money involved seems clear. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' $45 million a year is at the top end. Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is making $39 million a year.
Does Prescott come in a little ahead or a little behind Watson's deal?
Even still, two more deadlines remain.
Deadline No. 5 is the 2021 NFL draft on April 29. Without a deal by then, the Cowboys would have an obligation to at least consider drafting a quarterback at No. 10 overall because there is no guarantee Prescott will be with them in 2022.
Deadline No. 6 is July 15. Without a deal by then, Prescott would have to play the year on the franchise tag, making it more likely than ever this would be his final year in Dallas, because the franchise tag in 2022 would rise to $54 million.
What if Fields or Lance is available at 10? Would you move on from Dak?

The injury complicates things
Will not have a long term deal in place

If I'm Dak, unless the Boys blow me away I'm heading to free agency next year. At some point the bubble will burst on 8-15 level QBs, but it probably won't be next year.
If Fields is available I may move on. Lance is such a project I would have issues pulling that trigger.

I know Dak is a good QB, but he seems to be overestimating his own value.

A great quarterback?
For f*ck's sake - he's average AT BEST. A quarterback who has never won a playoff game should ever be described as "great."

He is lining up his next contract for the salary cap explosion for when the new TV deal kicks in. Have to admire his dedication for that. It is smart and he is taking the gamble on himself with these 1 yr deals.

How?

Have you watched Dak the last two years? The only QBs I’m putting above him are Mahomes, Wilson, Rodgers and MAYBE Watson. He seriously gets a lot of unfair hate just because he wears a star on his helmet.

Dak has won a playoff game.

For the next 5 years? Or next season? I'd definitely take Brady over him next year, probably Burrow and Hebert too.

lol what? barring injury, he's a fringe top 10 QB.

probably Burrow

the amount of qb's unhappy with their situations will be nice leverage for valley ranch, whereas at the end of a dismal year it looked as though dak would have the upper hand. if the cowboys decide to stay with dak he will have to come to their terms.

How exactly?
There’s more teams unhappy with their QB situation than there are QBs unhappy with their team situation

Both coming off of pretty serious injuries, and Burrow has way more talent around him (assuming they address the offensive line). I have never understood the Dak hype, and he's in the Kirk Cousins / Jimmy G tier of guys good enough to get paid, but I wouldn't build my team around.

quote:I could put a bunch of those two years in the bank. Dak is a North Louisiana guy that went to school in Starkville. Probably not spending much of it.
$37.7 million.
I know QB's are getting crazy money with long term contracts, but a man can still set himself up for the future, with over $75 million for a couple of years, while bidding his time as a franchise QB.

Dak is much much better than those two
I’d be all in on Dak on the Pats. Hes not in the top tier but he’s really fricking good

And Josh Allen

Dak was really good as a college QB, his NFL career hasn't been all that great, injuries aside. He's trying to get Mahomes money and just isn't worth that.
Make a deep playoff run and I will be glad to change my mind.
