Very exciting news though a bit mixed. Jumbo shrimp games are a great minor league experience

I think they would have the same problems the Rays have in Tampa but probably worse.

If you built a stadium in Jacksonville, you're actually likely building it on the southeast side and developing around it rather than going downtown. The problem is that the area as a whole is basically split in half by the St. John's River, and there are a ton of people that live on the west side of it. I have a hard time believing enough people on the west side will want to haul their arse home from work then haul arse all the way to a stadium across the river for a game with any regularity. Attendance would be awful, and you essentially have to build an indoor stadium to justify it. Though it would instantly be the best venue for all kinds of events in the area.

Supposedly they have already bought the land to build the stadium downtown, also near the new soccer stadium

I think we’re all hopeful that it stays in the Tampa area.

Is that on the table?

I'm sure its on the table and is still the most likely option IMO, but with a new ownership group and no real commitment to Tampa currently its easy to see them moving IMO. There is a group actively trying to get them to move to Orlando, and now you have the Jacksonville angle as well. The Shrimp owner is also in the group buying the Rays, so I guess they could play in the Shrimp's stadium until their own gets built.

Stadium is in a horrible location though. Where would a MLB team put a stadium in the area?

Downtown is being revitalized some around the Stadium, but yeah I just don't think you'd have the room. God forbid there be a concert, jags game, and mlb game on the same day on a weekend.

I think they would try to develop a stadium and basically their version of The Battery somewhere around/between 95 and 295 south east of downtown.

This franchise isn’t moving

They’ll either stay put in St.Pete or be contracted when they merge with the Marlins

Is this a thing? I saw that a group from J-ville might be buying the Rays, but didn't see that they would be moving the franchise.

There is absolutely zero chance this happens, that’s for sure

Jacksonville is barely a one pro sport town & they are putting a massive amount of money into renovating the Jaguars stadium. The Rays aren’t moving there.

New ownership group would not move franchise out of Tampa Bay area. No deal is finalized yet. Sternberg has backed out of many deals in the past.

Went to a Jumbo Shrimp Game last summer. Nice time and nice set up in the area with the Jags Stadium and Baseball Field, and Arena all close by. Problem the Downtown area is DEAD. Not dirty or unsafe like Nola but it seems like very few people hang out there. Nice for Minor Leagues but definitely not a Major League area.

2027, when the stadium is finished downtown will look completely different. Now I don't think we can support a MLB team though, die hard football fans.
