College football is a big business

To maximize revenue, you want interest from most amount of consumers

To meet that end, you want to include all areas of the sales base.

This still does nothing for the conference champion proponents.

Your entire post literally makes no sense and you basically prove the OP's point. Just because they are both called "conferences" doesnt mean they are the same thing. OBVIOUSLY, there is a dif between the SEC and the NFC. The SEC is more comparable to the NFC South with the ACC being the NFC North and the PAC being the NFC West. Do you have to win your division in the NFL to make the playoffs? Nope.

Before wildcard spots that's how the MLB and the NFL worked.

Winning your division was always important

Ok I meant other than the CFP haha. Name a big time sports in the USA with playoffs where conference/division champs don't make the playoffs.

How are you the best in the nation without being the best in your conference?

Penn State's win is the only reason there is an argument. There still isn't much of one. Ohio State will get in, and the melt will be fun.

Because the divison winners get an auto bid no matter how bad their record is.... Carolina was 7-8-1 a few years ago.

A one loss non champion would exclude 2 conference winners

because the reason for conferences and conference championships is the same as the reason for a playoff.

you play everyone in your division and then the best teams from each division play each other to see who the best team in your conference is. OSU had a great year but i'm sorry you didnt win the playoff you already had to determine who the best team in your conference was.

why should you then go to a playoff to determine who the best team in the nation is?

2 Big Ten teams being in is as big a joke as i've ever seen. Washington deserves a shot

If you win your conference tournament in hoops you are in.

And the NFL, NBA, and MLB. That is called a "requirement"

The OP's use of the term "requirement" is incorrect and literally exactly the opposite.

so why does anyone still think it's a requirement?

Since you didn't even come close to addressing the question you replied to, the question still stands.

Why is the OP saying it's a "requirement?"

Picking the top 4 teams for the playoffs have literally nothing to do with picking the top team.

No clue why people can't seem to understand that.

What you're arguing for is no postseason at all, and just giving the #1 team the title. But since there's a 4 team playoff, you pick the top 4 teams.
