What is the rationalization for this? FBS College Football seems to be the only sport where people have this requirement.

I don't think it should be a requirement. However, it's also the only sport, apparently, where a team can win their conference/division and not go to the playoffs in favor of another team from their conference/division.

That part is also odd.

I think the biggest reason is its naturally really difficult to wrap one's head around a team being the best team in the country when they weren't even the best team in their conference

A team could be 8-4 vs a team that's 11-1 and the 8-4 team is the conference winner.

Interesting. So, there's never been an upset where the better team lost? Let's just crown Pitt and USC.

no one even thinks twice when a 9-7 wild card makes the NFL playoffs

yet let a 1 loss conference non-champion in the conversation for the CFP and everyone gnashes their teeth.

should have thought about that when you lost though

That's because there are more playoff spots than conferences but before the NFL expanded the playoffs only conference / division champs made the playoffs. Same in the NBA NHL and MLB

When did Pitt and USC join the Big Ten and finish ahead of Ohio State for a division title?

No, the rules don't change every year...

The rules for CFB only change when a blue blood needs them to change.

That's when we change the rules...
