re: Why is winning your conference such a big deal?

If this was the NFL, Ohio State would have won their division based on overall record first.
The issue is that in the NFL ran team in each division plays the same teams and each other twice. It's a lot more fair to require a team to win their division that way.

In 2011 and in 2014, their battle cry was that a team who "didnt" win their conference shouldn't get to play for a title
No it wasn't. It was that a team that plays in the Big 12 and has a weaker resume shouldn't get in at our expense. That has nothing to do with this season.
Ohio State was the right pick in 2014, and will be the right pick in 2016. Both can be true, and both are.

What is the rationalization for this? FBS College Football seems to be the only sport where people have this requirement. I can't think of another sport, college or pro, where this gets people so worked up. A relic of how it used to be perhaps?
Kinda feels like it's the exact opposite of your OP.
Now that being said, I'd agree that OSU has a better resume than Penn St, even with a H2H loss and a PSU conference title, but that's a different argument than the way you presented it.

There is not a requirement to win your division to make the playoffs.
Winning a conference is objectively and measurably less important in CFB than the NFL, NBA, and MLB.
Theoretically, a non-conference team can get into the playoffs over the team that won that same conference being left out. Can that happen in any other sport you know?

I can't think of any other sport with such a flawed system

The goal of setting the field for the playoffs isn't to get the division/conference/whatever winners together, it's to get the best group of teams together.

So the entire argument is about OSU, you are an OSU fan, but this isn't about OSU. Sure.

It is a check and balance for the darlings. It is not perfect tho.

If you win your conference tournament in hoops you are in.

If the Big 12 is so weak, why are you counting the win over Oklahoma on your resume this year?

In the NFL the divisions are a lot more akin to college football conferences, so I would use that as the comparison. There is not a requirement to win your division to make the playoffs.
In the NFL, there are 12 playoff spots and 8 divisions to be won. So there has to be 4 wild card teams. Your argument is if Detroit wins the NFC North, they should be left out of the playoffs because the Packers just look like a better team

On this site? Because LSU fans are bitter about the split in 03 from OU not winning their conference and from Alabama pushing their shite in on 1-9-12.
In general because fans are upset when it's suggested their conference may be inferior and not deserve a team in as opposed to a,strong conference like the B1G this year deserving two.
They also think the general platitude of gaurenteeing a spot for winning a division should apply like in other sports without considering that in CFB things are vastly different in how a champion have always been chosen and leagues are so unequal.

The division is not the conference. You are moving the goal post. The playoffs in the NFL determine the conference winner. You certainly have to win the conference to win it all in every professional sport.

Don't be stupid. Oklahoma only plays in a weak conference.

Under NFL rules, this isn't even an argument. Ohio State goes.

This is it, apparently. Stick to the SECr if you want only SEC circlejerks.

In nfl, division winners are highest seeds. Then you have your wild cards
In college, the divisions are called conferences. No wild card system currently exists

Just pointing out that it doesn't matter.
There's also no system that puts conference champs in, so why does anyone still think it's a requirement?
