Well okay but if someone posts something that’s demonstrably false why wouldn’t I point that out?

No, but the ones in the 80’s weren’t the same as the ones from the 50’s and 60’s who colluded, either.

Collusion wasn't needed in the 50s and 60s. There was a reserve clause back then.

I think its that younger players are getting the big deals these days and they are not willing to pay players in their 30s, especially to long term contracts.

Teams do have control of their players way too long that’s true. If arbitration years were abolished and players allowed to become UFA’s in their early to mid 20’s, it would make collusion much harder.

Why would the Yankees sign him when they have one of the best staffs?

I agree with that. Tampa looks like great letting Carl Crawford walk and trading David Price. Teams see how it works and copy them. Angels look bad with Pujols. Give Harper and Trout the same terms at 6 years younger and its looks much better.

What’s the argument for collusion?

hese teams have finally gotten smart and quit giving old players ridiculous contracts.

Good idea but now they’ll have to figure out how to give it to them when they’re young. Otherwise the labor agreement fails

The problem lies in player control. I predict there will be a reckoning soon in the way of labor stoppage. Ultimately, rookie contracts and the rules governing service time will be adjusted to allow players to become free agents at a younger age, making it more lucrative for them and less back end prohibitive for teams to give big deals

Maybe it’s not happening, but to dismiss it outright and to patronize/personally attack someone for even suggesting it is not only intellectually dishonest it’s also downright bizarre.

i think it's possible that owners have discussed non-collusive behavior that results in effects rivaling collusion

the problem with free agency and mega deals is this fear that there is that ONE team who will pull a Texas/Arod move and overpay. that's the leverage agents used for years to scare teams into mega deals slightly below the threat level. if owners responded to this by being more open with each other about this threat-leverage, it wouldn't be collusion but removing that threat would lead to suppression (especially on the higher end

and the MLB is weird because of the drastic differences in ability to spend. this isn't the NBA or NFL where any team can sped "max" money. that reduces the number of teams who can act as this phantom threat

Apparently, he’s asked for a ton of money and a longer contract than what’s he’s worth based on his decline. He’s a pitcher over 30 who’s thrown a ton of innings in the last four years and he doesn’t throw hard.

The other thing is it costs a team a draft pick to sign him because the Astros gave him a qualifying offer and he turned it down. The Astros would get a compensation pick from the team who signs him if he signs before the draft.

If the Astros were smart, they’d sign him, considering McHugh and Peacock are starting to get rocked and Josh James has not pitched well. I know they’re counting on Whitley coming up at some point but I wouldn’t be counting on him dominating the league once he comes up.
