it seems like every time people talk about great rb's bo is always regarded as one of the best. looking at his stats, yeah they are pretty good, but he wasnt a receiving threat, and he touched the ball a limited amount of times. never had a 1000 yard season. he didnt have an extraordinary amount of tds for the amount of touches he got. I dont get it. he was a good player, but it just seems like he is hugely overrated because he never produced at a high level yet people call him one of the best.

He had the skill to be one of the best. Remember also, those stats were as a backup to Marcus Allen...

great physical tools
huge national name guy
1 national example of awesomeness

and the classic "ended too soon" label, which can slant a guy exponentially depending on his public perception

people perceived bo as a great RB, so they presume the years he lost would have been great

Basically you are right, but did you see him play? Remember too he played baseball, so he only played half the football season, when he did play, he made some spectacular plays and that sticks out to people and they project from that.

I dont get it. fricking pierre thomas will likely pass him up in yardage this year and already has him beat in tds sharing touches. plus he is a receiving threat.

bo jackson is just overrated because he was a big name coming out of college and because he played baseball.

THIS

Would have loved to see what would have happened had he only played football

Runs like this are why people think he was great

he was an effective runner in his short career

but you can take 4-5 year windows from a lot of backs who will mirror his efficiency

So? Thomas plays ever down, he's good, but we know what he is capable of. Bo Jackson, didn't play very long, when he did, he made some jawdropping plays in both sports. Plays that a guy like P Thomas can not make. When you look at it, its only a handful of plays, but because he didn't play very long, those stick out and people project from that limited sample. We will never know what his career would have been had he played only football. But yes, he was a big name and made some memorable plays, that's why he is remembered.

First, why are you so mad that people like Bo Jackson?

Second,

pierre thomas will likely pass him up in yardage

Do you think Emmit Smith is the greatest running back ever? He did have the most yards, you know?

Lastly, Bo can never be the best RB ever because he simply didn't play long enough. HOWEVER, he certainly is one of the best RB talents ever. If it weren't for all the "ifs", who knows what his legacy would have been, but he was certainly fun to watch.

Bo is a legend because for playing multi pro sports, being electrifying, and flaming out way quick. Again, I don't see how that can piss anyone off though?

I think it'd be hard to play a full MLB season then go straight to being a TOP RB in the NFL. Hell MLB players get worn down by Sept. Like another poster said he was also running behind Allen.

SFP syndrome. They look at numbers of people they never saw play and are righteously indignant over the injustice of it all.

the freak accident doesn't happen with the guy he ran over holding on dragging him down, he is one of the best RB's in NFL history.

Isn't he pretty high up there in yards per rushing attempt for a career?

I'm a Bo fan but this is the most overrated play in NFL history along with maybe Chuck Bednarik clotheslining Gifford.

Reading Bo Jackson autobiography sold me on him. In college you obviously see what he could do as a running back.
He made it clear if the Bucs took him #1 overall he would go and play baseball. Bucs didnt beleieve him, they draft him. And he never signs bc he hated the owner. (two sport first round prospect)
So he went and played baseball and won ROTY (i think). Led the league in homers one year. Was rediculous in the outfield too. All this being his backup sport.
Four years later he signs with the Raiders and in one play ended Brian Bosworths career. Backed up Marcus Allen and was electric. And had a career cut short due to injuries.
I dont ever argue that Bo was one of the greatest RB to play in the NFL. A better argument would be for CFB, given he won a Heisman.
But outside of Herschal Walker, I dont think their is an argument for a better all around athlete to walk the planet.
On ESPNCentury's top 100 athletes of the past 100 years, only one person voted Bo Jackson #1 overall. Dick Schaap. A man a lot of people respect. His reasoning was that it was a list for best athlete, and he never saw one better than Bo.
Michael Jordan was #1 on the list. And Michael was the GOAT at his sport, something Bo can never claim. But Michael thought he could be a pro baseball player, he failed at that, batting .200 in the minors. Then he thought he could be a pro golfer, he failed miserably at that. Bo was a better athlete.
Ok im done ranting.

he has 500 carries for his career. Thats less than 2 full seasons of an every down back.

yeah its impossible to argue that he was one of the best nfl backs ever.
the better argument is for athlete in general or college rb.
