Why does a team from the West always win the lottery when there’s a generational talent?

It seems like every year a so-called can’t miss prospect is available like Anthony Davis, Yao Ming, Oden/KD, Blake Griffin, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Zion Williamson, a Western Conference team wins the lottery. Meanwhile, Eastern conference teams always seem to win the lottery in weak draft years like 2006 with Bargnani and the Anthony Bennett year. The contrast in draft luck is astounding.

Both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic x2 disagree.

Why does Nola get rewarded with #1 picks when their star player wants to leave?

The 2 most famous (luckiest) lotteries were Knicks getting Ewing and Cleveland getting LeBron

Because if they didn't they would have to move the franchise

Dwight Howard wasn’t considered a generational talent at the time. He was an unproven high school kid out of Georgia and many people were vouching for Okafor to go #1. And Shaq was almost 30 years ago. I’ll give you LeBron. So that’s what, one generational player in the last 20 years compared to the five or six players that went to a Western Conference team?

We’re calling KAT a generational talent in this thread but not saying the same about Dwight Howard or Kyrie?

Sick.

Derrick Rose, Kyrie, John Wall, and Ben Simmons all went to the East...

Those first two are absolutely better than KAT.

Pelicans weren’t going anywhere regardless of what happened in this draft.

And the time that Orlando won it, a year after winning it and getting Shaq, they had the worst odds if I remember correctly. Or at least not very good odds. That was when they drafted Webber but traded for Penny. But yeah, those were all a long time ago.

Yes he was. Not a Shaq, Duncan, or Davis but I’d put his pre draft stock ahead of Kylie Irving, who is also part of my x2 above.

Your stipulation for generational talent is iffy. What about when Cleveland drafted Kyrie?

They won it the year after drafting Shaq when Webber was the consensus top pick. They traded that pick for a king’s ransom that brought them Penny Hardaway and the bulk of their core through the 90s. Man if Shaq had stayed...

Of that group only AD is a generational type player. Kd wasn’t drafted first so can’t put him in the list. Hard to top Shaq and LJ from the east, not to mention Patrick Ewing

Just quickly went back to 79 when magic was drafted. Of all time great players drafted #1 overall, it’s maybe 5-5 maybe 6-5. There have been some bad picks.

East has won 13 of the last 20 lotteries:

They’ve landed 8 all stars in that slot. West has landed 4 in 7 top picks.

Giannis is a generational talent and he was drafted 15th by Milwaukee in ‘03. Anthony Bennett was #1 pick

Pacers drafted Kawhi at 15 as well. Another generational talent. They traded him for George Hill...

So yeah, generational talent being assumed pre draft is bullshite sometimes.
