I can't fault him for his natural instinct.

Better question.....at the end of the first half udub punts with one time out left down by 3. As the returning team, who has the lead by only 3, why even take a chance of muffing the punt and give a huge momentum swing? In case anyone forgot, he fair caught it within their own 20 with less than 20 seconds left I believe.

I wonder if the responses would be different if Stanford had gotten the ball back and scored to win. Again, they easily could have gotten it back with plenty of time and in great great field position.

Mine wouldn't. I would fault the Washington Offense.

Sorry, still think the pick is the right thing. If you get one first down, game over. And they got it.

I didn't see the play. How was it a stupid pick? Someone give me a brief rundown.

4th down, and he catches it deep in their own territory. Inside the 20 I think. If he bats it down it goes back to the 40something. There was about 2 minutes left.

I think the pick was the right move though.

Sounds fine to me...pretty sure no DB would make the decision to bat it down.

Yeah, they have the ball either way, and field position doesn't matter if you get one first down.

him intercepting that was retarded as hell. he easily couldve just swatted it out of bounds.

most likely these guys aren't trained to think about things like this. they have a bunch more things to think about pre-snap, then post-snap they are reading keys and reacting. was play stopped prior to this final play or were they running hurry up?

in baseball you have much more time to decide what to do with the ball if it comes to you, plus you are continuously taught to know where you are going with the ball before it comes to you.

I bet this player was told maybe a couple times in his life to bat a ball down, if ever. if there was a timeout prior to the final play I could see how a coach could have instructed them to bat the ball down, but even then would you want your DBs thinking about something they havent repetitively practiced?

just some thoughts.

to me it doesnt take incredible cognitive thought to say "hey its 4th and 4, if they throw a 30 yard pass and i have zero chance of returning it....dont catch it". i mean i understand its a fast game, but it's not rocket science.

The smarter play would have been to knock it down or hit it out of bounds. But I cannot blame the guy because they train some much to make the INT it is hard to make that decision

MD Jennings shouldve not knocked the ball straight down instead of going for the pick against the Seahawks, cost his team the game...

So did the refs but still

this about sums it up. i turn the sound down most games because i can pretty much see what's goning on my own self. now, if i'm listening on the radio, i need them to tell me.

And if that Titans player had just caught the Lions hail mary instead of knocking it down...

you can probably name 3 instances in football where this didnt work (and you already named one). I'm willing to bet the number of times trying to knock the ball down didnt work is far fewer than the number of times the db went for the pick and it didnt work.

i bet its not even close.

Didn't the Texans lose a game to the Jags a year or two ago for batting it down rather than picking it off? I think they did

what he should have done was jump up catch the ball and just force it i
to the ground i. e. just land on the ball and make sure no one had a chance to catch it and it was 100% incomplete. plus if it was ruled a catch its not a fumble since the ground can't cause a fumble.

the is kid CLEARLY wasn't thinking! he was just thinking about how much of dat pussy he was goin get after that killa INT.

I would coach my guys to go up and the get the ball. I wouldn't want them every thinking about whether or not they should be intercepting it based on field position.

Also, in the NFL (I know your example was college)an INT at the end of a game like that could mean the difference between getting and not getting an incentive bonus in his contract.
