Pure instinctive reaction. If you've ever covered a man down the field before, you know you rely on this a lot.

if he tried to bat it down and accidentally tipped it up (or bounced it off his leg) and it turned into a catch, he would never hear the end of it.

you dont think he could have just as easily fumbled it off his hands and into the receivers hands going for the pick and not heard the end of it?

that point didnt really do much for me.

I saw the play live. He did not have to bat it down. All he had to do was let it drop. Receiver had no chance. If the interception was followed by a fumble by the offense, the game would have gone to Stanford.
I can understand why the DB went with instinct. I cannot understand why the announcers did not point out his mistake. They claimed that it was a great play. It was not. It was a mistake.

Desmond's older brother Marcus Trufant made an almost exact same interception (very similar scenario, even in the same area of that same field) a couple/few years ago in a home game with the Seahawks. He said in hindsight he should have batted the ball down, but in the moment your instinct as a DB is to attack the ball while it's in the air and catch it if you can.

And who is to say our daWgs don't make the first down anyways without the offside penalty on Stanford? It was what, 3rd and 4 or so? Sark dialed up a handful of key conversions in that game, he just might have done it again to seal the deal.

I remember a Chargers/Pats playoff game from a few years ago where the Chargers intercepted a pass on Fourth down and then during the return he fumbled it back to New England, who then kicked a game winning FG. If the Chargers would have batted the ball down they would have won the game.
