Why Can’t Baseball Just Use Technology to End Sign Stealing?

Just Pitcher and catcher (and/or coach) a smart watch. Catcher/coach sends signal to pitcher.

If tech was available at the time sport was created then I’m sure they would’ve used it.

The other team might hack it, then there is another scandal..

I mean the same could be said for football and hacking into the coms btwn coach and QB. That also is a whole new level of cheating.

Sign stealing is as old as the game itself. You're never going to stop it. The Astros aren't the only ones. Why do you think Mike Fiers isn't being hailed as the savior of Baseball? All of these teams are keeping their heads down.

Smart watches? We don't need the nerds taking over baseball more than they already have.

Ok. Is it a big deal or not then? I’m just saying it can be eliminated if MLB wants it to be.

They could do what high school baseball does to give signals to base runners and batters. Randomly generated three digit numbers worn on wrist sweatbands with whatever headings the coach wants (bunt, steal, hit and run, nothing). The meaning of each number could be changed literally every game. Only rule change would be to allow the pitcher to wear a sweatband on his wrist. Randomly generated three digit numbers now indicate pitches (fastball, curve, slider, change). Numbers would only use the digits 0-5.

I don't think it's a big deal, but we've never seen a sign stealing scheme like this. I'm positive that it's happened before, but teams never had a rat like Fiers. Baseball has seen numerous scandals and moved on. This isn't nearly on the level of the Black Socks or Pete Rose.

I think they should have an ear piece like football. Let the coach, catcher, and pitcher have it. Didn’t college or someone try this last year? Could have sworn Ole Miss did as a trial. Maybe it was SEC tourney only.

Astros would probably hack it and steal signs that way. Cheaters cheat.

I know that has become the argument that why is some cheating ok and this is not. Picking up tells/signs during the natural flow of the game is one thing. Using technology is going against the natural order of things. Might as well flash the next pitch on the scoreboard

Stealing signs using only your eyes and brain is not cheating.

So is football just using some foreign technology that cannot possibly be grasped by baseball personnel? Or are you suggesting that stealing play calls by hacking technology in football happens but is not as big of a deal for some reason that you can explain in a reply?

I guess if you don’t count the dozens of players form different teams speaking out against the Astros on this. Would be crazy if all these teams had a cheating system in place but have their players come out and talk about how terrible the Astros cheating is.

Its honestly pretty ridiculous the pitchers have to get every pitch called by somebody. The only real communication that needs to happen is catchers being aware breaking pitches or off speed is coming.

You just described what pitchers and catchers currently do.

This isn’t college. MLB catchers call the games for the pitchers however both pitchers and catchers work together to come up with that game plan. The reason they give signs is so both know what pitch and where it is going.

I would be willing to bet only elite starters or closers have the green light to call their own game. Analytics probably used for a majority batters with little to no changed calls by pitchers.
