My pawpaw was a Braves fan going back to the 70s throughout the TBS years. My family raised me a Braves fan, grew up watching Chipper and Andruw Jones almost every night. Many summers we would catch a series in atlanta and then head to the smoky mountains.
I was 3 years old for the 95 world series so I didn't remember it. All I mostly ever knew was post season heartbreak until 2021.

A lot of people here live in crappy cities.

It was TBS in the late 80s early 90s for the Braves domination so all the kids were Braves fans and now they are middle aged
Then WGN was very popular in the mid-late 90s so that’s why the Cubs and Braves always have so many fans at away games.

My dad grew up an Astros fan and going to games. I can only assume they were on the radio in Jonesville and then one of the teams they could get on TV once cable became a thing. When were growing up we would take vacations to Houston to do AstroWorld, WaterWorld, NASA, and go to couple of games in the evenings. Craig Biggio is my earliest memory of having a favorite baseball player. In early 2000s we would watch almost every game- Fox Sports Southwest thank you for your service
Been a fan for as long as I can remember because of all that. I’m sure there’s a lot of similar stories.

Astros used to be associated with the New Orleans Zephyrs from 97-04.
This has nothing to do with it. Zephyrs were a Marlins affiliate for a longer period and much more recent. And that has resulted in zero Marlins fans in the surrounding area.

Maybe in your mind, but I have friends that only watched the astros because of their proximity and the zephyrs. Not to mention they were actually a good team in the late 90s/early 2000s. Couple that with how good LSU was in the late 90s/early 2000s and baseball was a pretty big deal around south louisiana.

People in Miami dont even like their own team. Their attendance numbers are abysmal. Miami is a bunch of fair weather fans for any sports. Its entertainment, nobody cares if they win or lose.

Maybe early 2010s when one was in the World Series and the other was historically bad.

Rays don't count because no one is actually sure they exist.
The Rays problem is that:
1) They are in a retirement city. I watched them play the Yanks in the Trop and it was 50/50 fan split
2) The trop (while I didn’t think it was bad as people claim) sucks and is difficult to get to for fans
3) You can’t really invest in the team, because they turn over 50% of of their roster every year
That being said, I still like them more than any other AL team. They do a lot with little

quote:Mine was Hurricane Harbor or Six Flags and then a night game at the Ballpark in Arlington. Grew up a huge Rusty Greer, Pudge, Juan Gone, Will Clark, Mark Mclemore, and Dean Palmer fan in the late 90's. First game was watching Kevin Brown throw in the old Arlington Stadium. I knew a lot of Stros, Cubs, Braves, and Cardinal fans growing up. Braves had TBS, Chipper, Blauser, Javy, Glavine, Maddux, Avery, McGriff, and Smoltz. Cubs had WGN, Harry Caray, Sosa, and Sandberg. Stros had the Killer B's and the AstroDome and then Enron with it's roof and fantasy dimensions and characteristics. Cardinals were a lot of peoples Dad/Grandads favorite team. There are still a lot of Rangers fans, especially in North/Northwest La, they are just outnumbered by Astros fans due to the recent success of the franchise and with Baseball not just being a WGN, TBS, Wednesday and Sunday night baseball game we can consume. It's like the Cowboys fans in the mid 90's when the COwboys were winning and on TV every week, it was easy to see why they would have more fans than the Home State team who would give moved off TV for the Cowboys and were just kind of mediocre in good seasons.

I disagree. There are many reasons why Louisiana has a large amount of Astros fans but NOLA having a minor league affiliate 20-25+ years ago is not one of them.

Definitely enjoyed that one a time or ten.
Water parks definitely represented something different to me as a kid than they do now haha. Little bit more forgiving of crowds of people when I was younger.

Astros = closest team to most of Louisiana, all games used to be on radio growing up
Cubs/Braves = tons of fans due to all games being on TV thanks to WGN and TBS
Yankees/Red Sox = always on TV
those are the Louisiana mlb fan bases
This is accurate. Also, for N. Louisiana, yes, you'd think they'd be more Rangers fans. But back in the 70s and 80s, the Astros were decent and had some great players and were shown on TV in Shreveport. The Rangers were not very good then. When I was a kid, people in my area would go to Astroworld and an Astros game instead of the Rangers and Six Flags.

As a kid in the 60's I used to listen to all the Astro games at night on a transistor radio. Never was a huge Astro fan but I loved baseball and this is what we could get at the time besides the Saturday game of the Week.
I follow the Astros now since they called up a kid that played with my son for several years when they were younger. He makes his fourth pitching start tonight.

How are Louisiana people that live anywhere from 2 hours to 5 hours away from Houston be Cardinal fans?
Probably picked up their fandom from their grandpaws/great grandpaws back when AM was the only option
Correct. My dad grew up in Mississippi then Louisiana in the 60's and the only games he could get on the radio were Cardinal games with Harry Caray. So any concentration of Cardinal fans in Louisiana is probably people in their 70's.
A LOT of Louisiana folk between 45-60 years old grew up listening to the Astros on radio and that is how we became fans. The Rangers were never on our radar because not only did we not get them on the radio, but we never saw them on TV either. In the days before inter-league play, the Astros never played them obviously and all we got on TV besides the Saturday game of the week was the Braves and Cubs.
It was a weird dynamic--the American League was almost like a foreign league because all we ever saw/heard in BR was Astros/Braves/Cubs.
The Yankees also had a decent fan presence in the 70's here because of Ron Guidry
