Why is 2004 some benchmark?

I hate stats like these without any context.

It’s a 20 year trend… I would assume someone outside of the top 12 won in 2003…

3 seed Syracuse won & was not ranked in the top 25 week 6

Yup. But I don’t believe we get a Cinderella story this year. The field is just really deep with top tier teams….

Funny how the Aggies are getting zero love. Projected #2 seed.

Not sure I’d go that far. They do have a 30 point loss to Tennessee. Condon is a great player but he’s not the defensive presence that Clingan was.

It was 20 points against Tennessee, and UCONN lost to Creighton by 19 last year.

Michigan State - under the radar team.

Extremely overrated this year. They can’t make a 3 to save their life. Won’t be higher than a 5 seed

They are decent at best and I highly doubt they can put together that many wins in a row. But that Richardson kid is the real deal.

2002-2003 Syracuse was not ranked until week 10 and reached the top 12 in week 17, peaked at 11 in week 18, and dropped in week 19 to 13 after not winning their conference tournament. They were a 3 seed in the east regional as an at-large bid.

When is the last time the #1 pick won the NCAA Championship?

Danny Manning and Magic Johnson are the only two I remember.

It’s a bit of an odd year. The majority of the powers this year are SEC programs and the other conferences seem very down in comparison.

On the other hand, an SEC team hasn’t even made the title game in 12 years.

Duke is a good team in an uncharacteristically bad ACC league. I just don’t have them winning it.

You also have to consider that there are teams who if they put it together would probably make a deep run (Kentucky, Kansas, Houston, etc) but too wildly inconsistent.

Not a matter of love or not. They've had alot of luck and barely scrapped by against inferior teams + lost all their toughest games (Purdue, Alabama, Kentucky, Ole Piss)

What are their Odds?

Remember when we were like 11-2 and it felt like we might be a surprise good team.
