I was a long time proponent of a CFB playoff and I'll readily admit I was wrong.
I prefer the old system. No matter how subjective and silly it was, it made CFB one of the most exciting sports out there.

The SEC brought this on themselves. They have hosed teams and other conferences for a long time. I agree that every conference should do what’s best for them but it’s finally catching up to the SEC. I love SEC football as I’ve grown up in Alabama and Georgia but I do find it funny watching SEC fans whine the first time the BIG goes on a run with back to back Natties. And many SEC fans are just now realizing who has the actual deep pockets and power. And it’s not the SEC. All this trash talk from the SEC about taking over stadiums and filling up 100,000 person stadiums is finally proven to mean nothing because that’s not where the real money is.
The tide is turning and the power is now in the hands of the BIG which is why they are now calling the shots and Sankey is essentially powerless.

College football had the greatest season in sports. Lose one game and it might be over for you. It made you live and die by it every week. But we had a few holier than thou losers here, y’all know who they are, who said it was awful and needed to be changed.
LSU can lose to Alabama, Florida, and Auburn and still make the playoff? Why watch the games.

College Football - doesn’t exist anymore

I used to tune in every single week and watch starting with college game day. I was glued to the tv until the pac after dark games. In recent years I’ve tried to stay up with my team’s game and usually the other big matchups of the week. And now, if this shite passes you can bet I’m gonna start spending my fall Saturdays doing something else. Because there’s no longer a reason to spend over 3 hours (maybe even 4 hrs with ads) watching at least 6 games of the regular season

How about 2 from the PAC12? They can sit the season out as a lot of fans will if you're taking everyone with a pulse for the Playoff.

I’m done; nuke it all. Hard reset to the 00s: no NIL/portal, bring back the BCS.
I don’t care anymore that it screwed us out of a natty in 11. It also gifted us one in 07.
Post-2020 CFB is an abomination.

Sure whatever. At this point I’m not even worried about it. I’ll watch whatever players are wearing an LSU jersey but the college game is just a mess for fans.

It's the ugly side of capitalism.

No thanks big 10. I think the current format is great actually.

Lol no. The BIG doesn't have 7 playoff teams on a consistent basis to agree to this. The SEC probably does, but it's still an awful idea.

Exactly.

Not exactly.
Capitalism <> “money grabbing free for all with no rules or structure”. That’s the “money problem” here. Everyone is bending, contorting and screwing the sport sideways to get paid. It’s anarchy not capitalism.

That's right. They even had the best slogan: EVERY GAME COUNTS
quote:
Lose one game and it might be over for you.
Well, that was part of the problem. There was a core group of 3-4 programs that played by different standards on and off the field. They could pay players, everyone knew it, and get away with it. They could lose games and those games would not count against them at all. In fact, losses magically turned into win with stupid shite like "they eye test".
CFB is and always will be a beauty contest with the media determining who wins. The playoff was always destined for this due to the media having to force in their favorite teams.
We altered the BCS when two media darlings failed to win their games.
We dropped "every game counts" when a media darling failed to win their conference three times, and were forced into the playoff.
We dropped a team out of a playoff after an unbeaten season and replaced them with a media darling due to an injury. Something that never would have happened to said media darlng had they had an injury.
Now we have to expand the playoffs so more media darlings can make it.
How no one pays attention to these patterns is beyond me.

The solution isn't expansion. It's to take subjective factors out of the equation. Every other sport goes by your record (or in the case of college baseball and basketball it's a sport where a larger field makes sense and the bubble teams don't have an argument). CFB was the only sport where a team could be undefeated and not be the champion.

ok, but this auto tie ins are bullshite, unless these teams have to fulfill requirements. we dont need 7-5 playoff teams, from either conference.
you should have to have a ranking of this, or a rpi, etc in certain range to be qualified.

For those pining for a return of the BCS how to do you handle 2018 and 2019? Both seasons had 3 undefeated teams. 2018 most will easily write off Notre Dame. But 2019 who gets left out? The reigning champions were the 3 seed. There is no world where the defending champions go undefeated and get left out that doesn’t cause a massive revolt.

You can't despise a system and then turn around and use that same system to determine who makes it into a "playoff."
