INCORRECT. Even Nolan at his best could walk 6 guys and get lit up for 7-8 runs. The chances of Pedro having that happen are far less greater than Ryan.

AT THEIR BEST IN A ONE GAME SITUATION
When Nolan Ryan was at his very best, he threw a no hitter and Pedro didn't.
Can't read dummy?

Obviously you can't.{read between the lines.]

Pedro threw a perfect 9 innings once... only it didn't count as a perfect game because it went to extra innings tied 0-0.

The amazing thing is that your whole logic for this decision would change if the 1995 Expos offense provided one run of support through nine innings on June 3.
I see I am a little late with this post.
quote:
On June 3, 1995, while pitching for Montreal, he retired the first 27 Padres hitters he faced. However, the score was still tied 0–0 at that point and the game went into extra innings. The Expos scored a run in the top of the 10th, but Martínez surrendered a double to the 28th batter he faced, Bip Roberts. Expos manager Felipe Alou then removed Martínez from the game, bringing in reliever Mel Rojas, who retired the next three batters.[31] Martínez officially recorded neither a perfect game nor a no-hitter. Until 1991, the rules would have judged it differently; however, a rule clarification specified that perfect games, even beyond nine innings, must remain perfect until the game is completed for them to be considered perfect. This retroactively decertified many no-hit games, including Ernie Shore's perfect relief stint in 1917 and Harvey Haddix's legendary 12 perfect innings in 1959 (lost in the 13th).

You're also operating under the presumption that a no hitter is inherently better than another dominant performance simply because a batter didn't get a hit. There are thousands of better starts than Edwin Jackson's 149 pitch, 8 BB no hitter.

Nice.
I thought this thread would be one reply. The first person writes Pedro, gets a couple upvotes, and /thread.

This has been a great thread. I've been playing Devil's Advocate since I actually think Pedro is better, but it isn't like Pedro was way better by any means. They were both great pitchers.

It's weird. I do feel like Baseball is one sport where longevity does matter.
I need a pitcher for just one game, then give me Ryan.
I need a pitcher for one season, the I'll take Pedro in a heartbeat.
Tell me that I can choose one, but I've got to keep them for 20 years, frick it, Ryan in a second. The big arse motherfricker is a freak of nature.

Had adjusted eras for era been posted? I know Martinez dominates that one even though Ryan went 37 years and cross over many

So you would take the pitcher, who at his best would throw a no hitter, but walk EIGHT batters, over the pitcher who at his best, would be perfect for 9 innings?

He's saying he'd take a guy who can fan 15 batters without giving up a run and throws 100mph in a one game situation and is capable of replicating it.

Many times.
But the old-timers in here refuse to acknowledge that there isnt a single starting pitcher in MLB history to have a better ERA+ than Pedro, while Nolan ranks 271st overall, tied with the likes of Juan Guzman and Kelvim Escobar

Oh well than Hideo Nomo is capable as well since he through multiple no hitters

Nolan Ryan is overrated and underrated in the same thread today.....
Overrated by many arguing he is the greatest or top 10 and underrated by those saying 20-40 other pitchers are better
