Some things I remember when watching as a kid.

There was not a yellow first down line. In fact we became very good on being able to tell if they picked up the needed yardage by just watching the play. It was always a fun discussion to guess how many yards they gained on tv.

Having no idea what the score is or how much time is left in the game. They would only flash the score and time every once in awhile. I remember coming home and turning on a game and asking my dad if they have shown the score yet and who is winning. And he would say they have not shown it yet..no idea.

Unable to watch your favorite team. Very few LSU games were shown on TV. Had to watch ND even though I did not like them. And having the Saints game blacked out because it was not a sell out.

No instant replay for play reviews. What ever they called is going to stand.

You would miss plays during a commercial break. Many times the game would come back after a commercial and your team had already scored a TD or threw an interception while the commercial was on. Sometimes they would not even show a replay and I always wondered what the heck happened.

Until ESPN2 came out in the 90’s I don’t think I had ever seen a Tulane game on tv in my life. Maybe a bowl game once in the 80’s? They did not play on tv.

Aside from Tiger Vision, you were lucky to see 2 or 3 LSU games on tv per season.

You had to GO to the games to see most LSU and all Tulane til the mid-90’s.

fun fact, in the movie cocktail with Tom cruise LSU is playing Georgia on the TV when he gets back home into the city. Always thought that was cool.

I remember watching SEC games on TBS. They were the precursor to Jefferson Pilot. I think there might have been a network in between the two as well.

this is a funny one to me. Sometimes I'll check old games from even the mid-90s, not even going back to the 80s, and as you mentioned 100% of the screen is just the action. No scroll bar at the bottom, no down and distance, nothing. And occasionally when they did update you it woudl just be a little box at the top with a separate camera filming the game clock from the stadium scoreboard lol, definitely no graphics departmnet.

Love rewatching games from the 80s. It brings back that whole time.

In the 70s I taped a transistor radio to my bike handlebars so I could ride around listening to Auburn games. We didn't have highlights available either, my neighbors had a record of audio from the punt, Bama, punt game they'd play.

I can vaguely remember that's about the time I started getting interested in it.

I love the intro to CBS games. They would kind of give you a breakdown of how each team's season was going or give you a backstory into a rivalry game while showing highlight clips with the music in the background I loved that.

I remember sitting in my grandfather's car listening to LSU football with him and my dad because his car had the best antenna!

Remember the chain gang and all the measurements? When is the last time you saw that happen?

Saturday night, I believe in the Washinton Oregon State game. Might have been the Michigan Maryland game.

Got it by the entire football and sealed the game. Really was no need to measure, but since it was basically the latest play they did.

I remember in the 70's being in the living room with my brothers and pops watching Monday Night Football with Dandy Don Meredith and Howard Cosell. The halftime show was highlights from Sunday's games and NFL films kicked arse.

NFL Films did kick arse.
Remember Inside the NFL with Nick Buoniconti & Len Dawson on HBO. That was when NFL was great.
