They should probably hire O'Brien or Row the Boat, those guys would the fit the program the best (one a pro guy in a pro city with a food college resume and the other a Pete Carol type motivation gimmick guy), but they will end up hiring Tony Elliott just because.

He could be a very good head coach, but the last former Clemson OC who got a big job was probably thw worst coach in swc history.

Jason Garrett . Used to pressure. Coached under Jones in Dallas and in the big apple.

Early list for USC: James Franklin, Matt Campbell, Bill O'Brien, Luke Fickell, P.J. Fleck, Mario Cristobal, Greg Schiano and Tony Elliott. Former coaches who could be sought include Chris Petersen and Bob Stoops.

The timing of this move makes me think they already got interest from one or more of these candidates, and they didn't want to give Helton a chance to do just enough to save himself again.

Campbell might be their guy. He brought back an experienced team with high expectations, and Iowa rained on their parade again. He might know he's hit his ceiling in Ames, and next season will likely be a rebuilding year. I know he's turned down bigger jobs in the past, but he could be more gettable now than ever before.

Would be the most recent graduate of the Nick Saban school for coaches who can’t coach or recruit well.

Nope, too much baggage. Defector has an article today about urban covering up for Zack Smith

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Zach Smith situation is a strange one for Urban. He was basically, for lack of a better term, his godfather from a young age. Grandson of Earle Bruce who was a mentor for Urban. Knew him since birth.

On a professional level I agree there was a lot of covering up for an assistant coach. On a personal level, I vehemently disagree with the stance. If someone you have a connection with is dealing with domestic problems, your first job is to help them in any way you can. Urban probably took it too far if the rumors about him shutting up Smith's ex are true, but as a human you wouldn't want someone you almost consider a son being looked upon in that light.

Rant over. TLDR I think Urban was in a tough spot with the Smith situation

Also — Sark, Kiffin, Urban, James Franklin, have significant buyouts. I’m told, SC would prefer to NOT write those buyout checks. I’m also told none are interested. All committed to current jobs. Also, Kliff Kingsbury LOVES his current job. Cross him off, for now.

A program like USC should never settle for a guy who's never been a HC.

I am calling it now its going to be an NFL coach, whether a head coach or coordinator. And USC will never learn.

I have trouble believing anything Cowherd is told. I'd like to think his sources just constantly troll him with bullshite, and he runs with it.

That would be a wild card since he’s a serial killer and the football coach is Chris Petersen.

Chris Petersen walked out of an interview last time he was in talks with USC. Granted that was Pat Haden as AD but who knows. He does not strike me as someone who likes a place like LA.
