Not the all time best but would be a damn entertaining core:

Wake Forest
Chris Paul
Josh Howard
Tim Duncan

IMO its starts and finishes with UCLA. This is the most dominate program in the history of college basketball. I think it could be argued that UCLA could put together 3 teams that could beat anyone.

If its based on just 5 names thats one thing but to put together a team that could actually have some type of chemistry is another. Really could Maravich and Jackson play together and be effective?

Syracuse has a pretty good group.

Dave Bing
Dwayne Washington
Derrick Coleman
Sherman Douglas
Carmelo Anthony
Lawrence Moten
Rony Seikaly

In terms of talent at the college level I don't think there's any all time team better... but I'm not sure how the offense would work with chris jackson, maravich, and O'Neal all expecting the offense to go through them

Kareem and UCLA would dominate everyone. Nobody could stop that man. I would also think about putting Gail Goodrich on that team in place of Davis.

he may not have been in his prime, but he was still an elite player, even at 23. Look at his stats his 2nd year, pretty much identical to 2000 which i think is the year he won MVP.

Oh and one other thing, its hard to argue the defending champs weren't the better team, though they were the 6 seed in the West. Orlando had the 2nd best record in the NBA. Horace Grant, Dennis Scott, Nick Anderson and Penny Hardaway (never could figure out why he tanked) were pretty damn good, its not like he took a team of stiffs to the finals.

. HO on the other hand had one of his best seasons that year.

definately the peak of his career. The 95 playoff run was amazing, no one, including Shaq and MJ were better than Hakeem was during that playoff run.

Where did I say LSU was "Clearly" the best? I said IMO if I'm not mistaken didn't I?

you said it was the best starting 5, that's debatable, but not clear cut. I would put LSU against anyone's 5, if we built teams, depth would kill us imho.

Agreed, how about a little depth on this team?

Gail Goodrich
Sydney Wicks
Kiki Vandeweghe
David Greenwood
Lucious Allen
Walt Hazzard
Keith Wilkes
Dave Meyers
Ed O'Bannon
Tyus Edney
Kenny Field
Aaron Affalo
Darren Daye
Trevor Ariza
Kevin Love
Russell Westbrook
Darren Collison

+ more Im sure.

probably cause most of it is before your time and we know about the guys that became NBA superstars and even focus on their NBA careers more.

I'm thinking the same thing about UCLA. The depth of excellent players is expected but I'd almost expected to see a couple of more names that impress the way Walton and Alcindor do.
Probably right about it being an age thing and that if I'd been watching them play in the early 70s I'd be more impressed by some of the players.

Kansas with Wilt may beat anyone though.

Sidney Wicks and Vandeweighe would start on just about any schools all-time top 5.

Like some mentioned, Hakeem was dominating in the era when there were still legit big men. I love Shaq but he played when there were a bunch of scrubs at center.

when do u think Shaq played?

shite in his 3rd year he led the NBA in scoring. 1994. all these legit big men were in their prime.

I agree, Shaq from 1997 to 2003 was the baddest center to ever play. The NBA had to change the rules to allow zone defenses to stop him.

I thought they did it to stop the Iso play that was becoming so prevalent.

Alincdor and Walton were all time great big men, but to say Shaq isnt on their level is stupid

put Shaq on a team back in that era, and it would be freaking ugly. UGLY!!!

As for Hakeem vs Shaq, I still take Hakeem. Shaq has always been a liability at the free throw line, whereas Hakeem was historically pretty good. Makes him more effective in the 4th quarter and puts more pressure on opposing defenses. Rebounding wise they're pretty much even. Hakeem was also a superior defender.

None of that is said with any disrespect towards Shaq. I just have more appreciation for Olajuwon's game, which was beautiful IMO.

This. But I'll admit I'm bias.

I don't know who said that, but Shaq was not as good in college as those 2, he was much better in the NBA than Walton, people forget what a Bad MF Jabbar was in the NBA howevah.

we could say that for anyone. Some one (not you I know) was running donw Duke cause they didn't have NBA stars, now do you really think Laettner couldn't hang with Petit?

ETA: lets also keep in mind the SEC was not fully intergrated from 67-70.
