Why Ortiz and not AROD, Clemens, Bonds?

Because Ortiz played for the good guys. If I had to choose any of those three to get in it would be ARod. Clemens and Bonds are douchebags. I know almost every guy in that original list used some form of steroids but Bonds' whole story just shite all over his records and is the only reason he isn't already in the HOF.

What about Will Clark? I was too young to remember his prime but what do y’all think?

Of course I hear state fans think he should be in but I really don’t know. Would like to hear unbiased opinions

That’s kinda what I thought. The baseball hall is a bit more selective than the NFL or NBA, correct?

If Schilling wasn't a nut, he'd be in already.

I wouldn't object to it, I know him primarily because he won National Player of the Year in football and baseball in high school and apparently he did well in the league

Did well?

In the entire history of the major leagues, catchers have won a combined 7 batting titles. Mauer has 3 of those, and one of the others was a title won during WW2. He won an MVP, and was a Top 10 finisher 4 other times.

Thirty players have had 6 seasons or more of a .400 OBP since integration. Mauer is the only one to have been a catcher, at any point in the stretch-- there isn't evne one other guy who did it once-- Mauer was a catcher *all* of those years.

He's not a first ballot guy, but he's a no-doubt Hall of Famer.

And he played over 1200 in his first 10 years and was by far the best to ever do it. There is no shortstop in baseball history that can touch his 96-03 run. shite there are very few players at any position that can. 40-40 season, batting title, back to back 50 HR seasons while playing legit gold glove defense. Untouchable by any other SS.

He also ended up with the more career games at SS than 3B just fyi.

And no I don’t give a shite about Honus Wagner and his stats from the 1800s.

I disagree. He had great % stats, but he just didn’t play enough to be Hall worthy imo. What good is getting on base 40% of the time when you’re only playing 100 games/year? He hit less than 150 homeruns and drove in less than 1,000 runs in 15 years.

And speaking of 100 games like I mentioned earlier, he only caught 100 games 5 times in his career, and most of his last 6-7 seasons were spent at 1B and DH. He was very good, don’t get me wrong, but I just don’t think he generated enough real-life offense to be in the Hall. It’s what you actually did, not what the percentages say you likely would have if you weren’t on the DL.

And for a man of his size, 6’ 5” 230 or whatever, his lack of power in the middle of the Twins’ lineup was always baffling to me. He had 28 bombs 1 season. His next best? 13.
Hit 11 twice and 10 twice. So, he only had double digit homeruns 6 times. That’s crazy to me in this era.

I like Joe Mauer. Seems like a genuinely good dude and a very good hitter( when he played) during his peak. Just didn’t do enough to get my vote if I had one. But it’s certainly not a hill I’d care to die on. This will likely be my only argument against his candidacy that I will ever propose. Not sure why I suddenly felt compelled to do so at 6:30 in the morning.

I actually opened this thread to point out that there are people—fans and voters alike—who think Bonds, Clemens, and A-Rod shouldn’t be in, however, everybody seems ok with Bagwell, Biggio, Pudge Rodriguez, and Mike Piazza being in? Seriously? I am as sure that those 4 juiced as I am that Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa did. Which is to say 100%.

I mean, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire are not in the Baseball Hall of Fame because they took steroids. But Jeff fricking Bagwell and Craig fricking Biggio are? Pudge Rodriguez? I will never be able to wrap my head around that bizarro world bullshite.

But the correct answer to this question is, and will always be, Dale Murphy. Until that glorious day when the Veteran’s Committee rights the sportswriters’ most egregious wrong.

No to the two relievers, Scott Rolen, and Ortiz. Yes to everybody else.

Bonds will never get in.

And they should burn down the Hall of Fame before letting Pete Rose in. Fortunately, he has ALREADY ACCEPTED a LIFETIME BAN, so we don’t have to worry about him ever being considered.

No he’s not, that would be Adrian Beltre, and he’s considerably better defensively than Rolen was. Beltre is no.10 all time in defesnive WAR, ranked right behind Omar Vizquel. Rolen is no.45. Still amazing defender and I beilive he is a HOF has well, but he’s def not the 2nd best defensive 3rd baseman of all time.

Bonds(I don’t care what he took, he’s the best player I’ve personally seen)
Clemens(Was a HOFER before roids, so I say yes)
ARod(the purest definition of a douchebag, but stats say yes)
Pete Rose(you can keep the ban, but let one of the greatest pure hitters and hardest workers in for crying out loud. He didn’t rape or kill anybody. Free Pete!)
The rest hell no. This is a HOF not Hall of All Stars.
